American Theocracy
American Theocracy: The Peril and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil, and Borrowed Money in the 21stC entury | Kevin Phillips
2 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
An explosive examination of the coalition of forces that threatens the nation, from the bestselling author of American Dynasty In his two most recent bestselling books, American Dynasty and Wealth and Democracy, Kevin Phillips established himself as a powerful critic of the political and economic forces that ruleand imperilthe United States, tracing the ever more alarming path of the emerging Republican majoritys rise to power. Now Phillips takes an uncompromising view of the current age of global overreach, fundamentalist religion, diminishing resources, and ballooning debt under the GOP majority. With an eye to the past and a searing vision of the future, Phillips confirms what too many Americans are still unwilling to admit about the depth of our misgovernment.

DS9 5.10 #TheRapture Such an American title... Sisko has visions that contradict his orders and he goes with the visions. An episode about freedom of will, where no rapture occurs at all. Beautifully acted and very moving despite the title.

Let‘s be frank: Dispensationalism and similar are US ideologies. Basically no one believes in this anywhere else. A *very nationalistic* theology with all the problems that entails.

suzisteffen 😭😭😭😭😭 Too real. 5y
tournevis @suzisteffen I know. Talk about a counter-productive ideology 5y
suzisteffen @tournevis Sigh. Foundation myths are huge. 5y

MayJasper I had never heard of Dispensationalism. I have just looked it up. Now I see what you mean @suzisteffen @tournevis. I have always been puzzled about the U.S. / Israel relationship. Now I begin to understand. 5y
tournevis @MayJasper You wouldn't have, you're in the UK, so... And they want end times to happen, badly, so sucking up to the Chosen people of G*d and such makes sense there too. It's really not a positive ideology in the end. 5y
MayJasper Oh I see. Profiting from association with the Chosen people. 5y
tournevis @MayJasper If G*d likes you, end times will be better for you. 5y
suzisteffen @tournevis I dated someone from Israel who was given a car by some dispensationalists involved in trying to recruit for “Jews for Jesus.” 5y
tournevis @suzisteffen It sounds like a bad tv plot! Why am I not surprised! 5y
suzisteffen @tournevis right? She felt kind of guilty about it (she was an atheist), but they were insistent! 5y
tournevis @suzisteffen It's such a strange world. 5y
Megabooks It is a strange world. I‘ve never understood Jews for Jesus. The book I tagged, despite being YA, definitely shows how tied up The Rapture™ is tied up with US evangelicals. @suzisteffen @tournevis 5y
tournevis @Megabooks FWIW, all of the Jews that I have know, including family membrers, have a lot to say about messianic jews, a lot, but it usually can be summarized by "they're not Jews, they're insane". 5y

Oh, dear. Two temptations in the church basement today: A Girl Scout cookie table and the newly reopened lending library. Looks like I'll be going home with something from both.
