Alice in Bed
Alice in Bed: A Novel | Judith Hooper
3 posts | 3 read | 21 to read
Arm yourself against my dawn, which may at any moment cast you and Harry into obscurity, Alice James writes her brother William in 1891. In Judith Hoopers magnificent novel, zingers such as this fly back and forth between the endlessly articulate and letter-writing Jameses, all of whom are geniuses at gossiping. And the James family did, in fact, know everyone intellectually important on both sides of the Atlantic, but by the time we meet her in 1889, Alice has been sidelined and is lying in bed in Leamington, England, after taking London by storm. We dont know whats wrong with Alice -- no one does, though her brothers have inventive theories -- even the best of medical science offers no help. So, with Alice in bed, we travel to London and Paris, where the James children spent part of their unusual childhood. We sit with her around the James familys dinner table, as she the youngest and the only girl listens to the intellectual elite of Boston, missing nothing. The book is accompanied by Hoopers Afterword,What was Wrong with Alice?, an analysis of the varied psychological ills of the James family and Alices own medical history.

This book. I feel bad 😊 it sounds so interesting, it has been sitting on my bookcase since 2015. It was my #bookspin for March, and I just cannot seem to pick it up. When I do I only get a few pages in and then get distracted by anything else that is laying about.

I am finally going to call this a bail and move on. Some books are better in theory than in actual reading I guess.

#JuneTunz #IKissedAGirl Alice in Bed is historical fiction based on Alice James-the sister of Henry & William James, a diarist & feminist who suffered from mysterious illnesses & was confined to her bed for years until her death at 43. Alice's first sexual relationship was w/a female friend at 18, then she was in a committed relationship w/her companion Katharine Loring. Interesting book about her life & the role of women in the late 19th century.

batsy Ooh, thanks for mentioning this. I've been curious about Alice James and want to read her bio too 7y

DebinHawaii @batsy @southerninlaw @Cinfhen It wanders a bit but it is quite interesting if you like history & brilliant and dysfunctional families. 📚👍 7y

Day23 #photoadaynov16 #dysfunctionalfamily Arguably brilliant w/ famous author (Henry), psychologist/philosopher (William) & feminist (Alice)-the 3 most famous out of 5 siblings-the James family was full of dysfunction: alcoholism, depression, repressed homosexuality & mental illness...This novel focuses on Alice, laid up in bed for years w/undiagnosed maladies & chafing against society's treatment of women.
