Death in Brunswick: Text Classics
Death in Brunswick: Text Classics | Boyd Oxlade
3 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
A cult hit later made into a film starring John Clarke, Sam Neill and Zoe Carides, Death in Brunswick is a classic Australian comedy. Down on his luck and hard up for cash, Carl works in the kitchen of a seedy rock 'n' roll joint in ethnically diverse Brunswick. The bouncers and bosses terrify him, he's desperately in love with a much younger Greek waitress, and to make matters worse his mother has come down from Sydney to stay with him. Then a dead body turns up. He and his best mate, Dave, will have to do something about it, and fast - or it's goodnight, Carl. With a new introduction by Shane Maloney, author of the Murray Whelan crime thrillers and head honcho of the Brunswick Institute. Boyd Oxlade was born in Sydney, and educated in Ireland and Australia. He has worked in many occupations, including as a cook, gravedigger and gardener. He has written screenplays and poetry, but is best known for his comic novel, Death in Brunswick, published in 1987. Boyd co-wrote the screenplay with John Clarke, which was later made into an acclaimed 1991 film. He lives in Melbourne. Shane Maloney is one of Australia's most popular novelists. His award-winning and much loved Murray Whelan series - Stiff, The Brush-Off, Nice Try, The Big Ask, Something Fishy and Sucked In - is characterised by a strong sense of humour and an acute sense of Melbourne's political and cultural nuances. He has been published in the UK, Germany, France, Britain, Japan, Finland and the U.S. www.textclassics.com.au 'Hilarious...macabre...creates with charming prose a perfectly charmless comic world.' A walk down memory lane with this darkly funny cult classic. Listened to the audiobook on a drive with my husband. Still worth reading.

The misadventures of some low lifes on the fringes of society. A VERY black comedy. Also a great film.

A great book, Australia, Melbourne and hilarious!!!!
It's also a Text Classic - watch out for this fabulous little publisher - they present readers with significant Australian titles that are often overlooked by the global publishing community.
