Jayla Walters isn't sure what to expect when her father's job uproots her and her brother, Dion, to Estes Park, Colorado. But right away, something doesn't seem right with their hotel. Jayla soon discovers that their home for the week, room 217 of the Stanley Hotel, is the most haunted place in all of Colorado. Barely asleep the first night, Jayla watches a ghostly woman walk toward her bed. And the ghost visits her room every night. What does the ghost want? And what happens when Jayla and Dion get in her way? Every state has its own spine-tingling stories of ghosts and mysterious hauntings grounded in its regional history. The Haunted States of America series uses real-life ghost lore as jumping off points to new, chilling tales. But beware: sometimes real life is stranger than fiction.

I received an ARC of this book from #NetGalley, it's a middle grade book set in the most haunted room of the infamous Stanley Hotel. Two kids discover their hotel room is haunted by the ghost of one of the former housekeepers. She cleans up after them and shows up each night to light the gas lantern. The author stayed in the Stanley Hotel but was unable to book the titular room, much of what he wrote about he learned while there. ⬇️

amb Probably a good book for tweens who enjoy the Goosebumps series. As I am familiar with the hotel's history (and The Shining), I thought it was well done and well researched with just the right amount of spook and mystery for middle grade readers 6y

This is a young adult Haunted States of America book. Jayla and Dion are checked into The Stanley Hotel for a week. They are bored while their Dad works so they explore. A great book for young readers that like ghost stories. Intriguing but not overly scary.

A pretty good middlegrade read:

✔ Simple but interesting plot
✔ Good writing
✔ Settings based on the real Stanley Hotel - the inspiration for King's Overlook Hotel in The Shining; also where the movie was filmed 😐

❌ So-so character development

Rating: 3.5 🌟
