Hollis lives in an area not too far from where he graduated from college. His friends do, too. They all sleep late, talk about jobs they might get, girls they might date, money their parents might send them. In other words, their lives are seemingly on hold. Everything is going to happen. But despite the day-to-day boredom, Hollis has something to bolster him: Another reality is constantly running through his head, and it's one that leads him to the conclusion that maybe, just maybe, it's time to get serious. Greatly exceeding typical tales of post-graduation angst, Lev Grossman has written a lucid and immediate novel of what and where a twenty-something's mind is when it isn't even made up yet.

What. The hell. Was that???

Basically, this entire thing is made of small-talk. I read it like you watch a train wreck: with sick fascination (literary viscera flying all around). The whole time, I kept waiting for the plot to happen.

It didn‘t.

(Also, I was constantly being surprised the MC‘s POV is in the 3rd and not in the 1st person—seemed like a 1st person book to me; maybe then it at least wouldn‘t be so jarring.)

1.0/5

A quick read. I didn‘t love this book or the characters. But it was an interesting picture of a young man with an active imagination and no will to work.

If you're writing a thesis called "Angst & Ennui in the Age of Crystal Pepsi" or "Slacker Alienation in 90s Gamer Culture," have I got a book for you! This is Grossman's debut, published in '96, a GenX Polaroid snapshot. Nothing happens (there is an entire chapter dedicated to a character playing "Echo the Dolphin" on Sega Genesis!) but I liked this navel gazing literary attempt by a writer who would later discover his voice in genre.

A modern day Joyce's Ulysses that is MUCH more fun to read. You see hints of The Magician's Quentin Coldwater in Warp's Hollis.

Bailedbailed

Two thumbs down. This was marked Sci-Fi / Fantasy in NetGalley. I should have read the description more closely before requesting, because it's about an idiotic young man fantasizing when he should be job hunting. Within a few pages, I was saying to myself "it's only 162 pages, what's so bad that I can't get through it?" Not a good sign. Bailed at 17%.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. 8y
Claireluana I totally bailed on that one too! Ugh. He probably should have let Warp remain in the dark shadow of obscurity! 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Claireluana Overall, the reviews I've seen are pretty dismal. There's a reason why lost books are lost ... 8y
Claireluana @rubyslippersreads no problem! You probably wouldn't have wasted much time on it, but this will save you the guilty feelings about bailing 😄 8y
Claireluana @BarbaraTheBibliophage I totally agree! It's kinda cool I'm an academic way to see how much he has progressed as a writer, though! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Claireluana I haven't read his other books, but they're on my shelf. Glad to hear he improves! 😜 8y

In his lost "zeroth" novel, Grossman plays around with themes he more fully explores in the Magicians trilogy - collegiate malaise, questionable friendships, and a world much brighter in your head. Hollis floats around Boston at the whim of his friends, but the real adventure is in his mind.
