WINNER of the 2013 Printz Award. In darkness I count my blessings like Manman taught me. One: I am alive. Two: there is no two. In the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake a boy is trapped beneath the rubble of a ruined hospital: thirsty, terrified and alone. Shorty is a child of the slums, a teenage boy who has seen enough violence to last a lifetime, and who has been inexorably drawn into the world of the gangsters who rule Site Soleil: men who dole out money with one hand and death with the other. But Shorty has a secret: a flame of revenge that blazes inside him and a burning wish to find the twin sister he lost five years ago. And he is marked. Marked in a way that links him with Toussaint LOuverture, the Haitian rebel who two-hundred years ago led the slave revolt and faced down Napoleon to force the French out of Haiti. As he grows weaker, Shorty relives the journey that took him to the hospital, a bullet wound in his arm. In his visions and memories he hopes to find the strength to survive, and perhaps then Toussaint can find a way to be free . . .

#marchintoreading #spinepoetry i couldn't upload pics last night. Have so many but this was my favourite. In darkness, I see you, the Sleeping doll.

rockpools That's one creepy poem! Can I ask how you find the Jeffery Deaver - he's visiting locally & I'd never heard of him (oops. Fail!). Tickets are going like nobody's business. Do I need to catch up quick? 7y
Suzze I love Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series. There is a new one soon, can't wait! Great poem! 7y
Alfoster @RachelO What @Suzze said! The Lincoln Rhyme series is awesome and his short stories (Twisted) are also great--and I'm not a short story fan!😍😍Yes, see him if you can!!! 7y

TheWordJar Creeeeepy! 😱 Love it! (I think they need a heart-eyed screaming emoji.) 7y
DeborahSmall @RachelO I saw him in Glasgow 5 years ago. Fantastic. I've read everything of his. His Lincoln Rhyme series got me hooked on thrillers. Kathryn Dance series also good. In fact The Sleeping Doll is the first in her series 7y
DeborahSmall @suzze think it's start of May, I can't wait either. It's one if the few authors I pre order 7y
DeborahSmall @TheWordJar The cover of The Sleeping Doll is very creepy, an old porcelain doll with no hair and, possibly no eyes....I'm not at home so can't check. But very sinister 7y
Suzze @DeborahSmall And I just preordered it! 😜 7y
rockpools @DeborahSmall @suzze @Alfoster Thank you! I'll find a Lincoln Rhyme to try out... 7y
Suzze @RachelO The first is The Bone Collector. 7y
DeborahSmall @RachelO they just get better and better. I read one on holiday 10 years ago. I remember because I was on a trip for my 30th, anyway I read the 4th in series then when I came home I started to read from the beginning. And was hooked I've preordered every new release for 5 years. He's my sisters favourite author. For her 30th I arranged for a signed copy to be sent from The Mysterious Bookshop in New York. I must post the pic of us and tag you..😂 7y

My husband and father-in-law built me a Little Free Library for Mother's Day, and it is finally installed. I even added some "currently reading" signage. I am in love, and I can't wait for people in my neighborhood to start using it!!
