pickSet in this almost alternate Italian world, for once I was drawn in by political schemes. The secrets and revelations...THE TREASON! Amalia first appears young and weak, and almost to the point of not caring about the Empire because her mother is the ruler. However, we see Amalia begin to grow a bit. And Zaira who is foul mouthed, street smart, and says what she thinks, damn your opinion. And sweet, good hearted Marcello. You deserve to be happy.

pickThis book takes place in a Venice-like world that has all the things I love: magic, action, political intrigue, and strong women characters. I loved the setting! I found the writing to be quite good and the characters very interesting. I am waiting to see where this trilogy goes next!

I‘m about halfway through this book and it‘s so frustrating. It seems like it has so much potential with the world building and the plot but I just don‘t love the main characters.. which makes it really hard to love the book. The Tethered Mage was my fave this month though Onyx Webb and Air Awakens get honorable mention, and Spaceman was definitely different!

bailedI tried. I actually went into this book with high hopes as I loved the synopsis, but I couldn't get over the bland main character & slow plot. (Also, I'm tired of YAs forcing romances in every fantasy & having the girl be a blushing innocent.)
After Amalia accidentally links herself to a fire mage, she's tasked with "training" her mage all the while keeping up appearances as a politicians daughter. Intriguing premise, poor execution.
