Light Filters In: Poems | Caroline Kaufman
15 posts | 16 read | 3 reading | 8 to read
In the vein of poetry collections like Milk and Honey and Adultolescence, this compilation of short, powerful poems from teen Instagram sensation @poeticpoison perfectly captures the human experience. In Light Filters In, Caroline Kaufmanknown as @poeticpoisondoes what she does best: reflects our own experiences back at us and makes us feel less alone, one exquisite and insightful piece at a time. She writes about giving up too much of yourself to someone else, not fitting in, endlessly Googling how to be happy, and ultimately figuring out who you are. This collection features completely new material plus some fan favorites from Caroline's account. Filled with haunting, spare pieces of original art, Light Filters In will thrill existing fans and newcomers alike. its okay if some things are always out of reach. if you could carry all the stars in the palm of your hand, they wouldnt be half as breathtaking

the problem was not
asking him
to complete me.

the problem was
believing I was incomplete
to begin with.

Started off National Poetry Month by reading this book. Beautiful poetry! It has a mix of free style and various rhyming schemes, though most are free style. Some of the topics are rough to read, so please check out the trigger warnings before reading and please take breaks when needed. Some of these poems hit pretty hard to me, but there was also a lot of hope in her words too!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.5/5)

I was feeling a bit down last night and decided to pick this book off of my shelves. I‘m glad I did, because this book was just what I needed. Even as a teenager, Kaufman manages to put together words that help smooth the splinters of ones‘ soul. Be warned for Kaufman touches on topics of love, depression, suicide, sexual assault, self-harm, and more.

This is how I thought I sounded as a teenage poet. Alas, it was not true. This gets a bit repetitive at times, but the author has a great grasp of imagery and there are some fantastic word choices. Not every poem was great, but most were good, and a few were outstanding. I think Caroline Kaufman is one to watch in the future.

I've really gotten back into writing poetry 😍 I just hold back so much but when I pick up a pen or start typing I just pour it all out. I just feel such a deep connection with poetry ❤ Maybe I should try posting some on here sometime? I don't know.

#FallIntoReading Day 5: Fats noted how #Reflection on mental illness is captured through Kaufman‘s poetry. Accdg to Fats: “Kaufman started writing poems at thirteen and began posting them online a year later. She is currently a student at Harvard University. She hopes to attend medical school someday and continue to hone her craft as a writer.” Her full post for Poetry Friday here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-iJt
