We Were Soldiers Once . . . and Young
We Were Soldiers Once . . . and Young: Ia DrangThe Battle That Changed the War in Vietnam | Harold G. Moore, Joseph L. Galloway
5 posts | 11 read | 6 to read
The New York Times bestseller, hailed as a powerful and epic story . . . the best account of infantry combat I have ever read, and the most significant book to come out of the Vietnam War by Col. David Hackworth, author of the bestseller About Face In November 1965, some 450 men of the First Battalion, Seventh Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Harold Moore, were dropped into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Three days later, only two and a half miles away, a sister battalion was brutally slaughtered. Together, these actions at the landing zones X-Ray and Albany constituted one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War. They were the first major engagements between the US Army and the Peoples Army of Vietnam. How these Americans perseveredsacrificing themselves for their comrades and never giving upcreates a vivid portrait of war at its most devastating and inspiring. Lt. Gen. Moore and Joseph L. Gallowaythe only journalist on the ground throughout the fightinginterviewed hundreds of men who fought in the battle, including the North Vietnamese commanders. Their poignant account rises above the ordeal it chronicles to depict men facing the ultimate challenge, dealing with it in ways they would have once found unimaginable. It reveals to us, as rarely before, mans most heroic and horrendous endeavor.

Loved the movie and loved this on audio. I discovered that a man local to my area was killed during this time in this are of Vietnam. This makes me proud to be the daughter, granddaughter, niece and cousin to former or current service members.

In November 1965, 450 men of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, were dropped by helicopter into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. This was one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War. Forty years later, some of the soldiers made a solemn return to Nam battle fields in We Are Soldiers Still #war #conflictedworlds

#PSA Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has been a part of my entire life. War is never romantic or beautiful. I wonder if we look at the concept of inherited trauma and think of all the history of war in this country is it any wonder so many people are hurt damaged or angry. I‘ve only watched this movie not read the book. #goodnightsaigon #wanderingjune #peace #semperfi #warisnotananswer

Cinfhen Such a beautiful post! If you have family members who served, Thank You ❤️ 5y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen you are sweet. My father was in Viet Nam. My husband in several wars and conflicts. My Brother just retired. I‘m angry at pro war machines, and false ideologies. The cost of war is infinite. 5y
Cinfhen I agree, but we still need to recognize the sacrifices these brave men & women undergo and the amount of courage it takes from the family as well. #WarIsNotTheAnswer but #HonorThesoldier (edited) 5y

Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen do they do a better job in Israel with veterans? Especially since everyone serves? Here the VA has not done a great job with treatment. I‘m very pro veteran- and do not believe any veteran or vets family should be in need. I knew wives who sold platelets to meet bills and many of our young families qualify for food stamps while serving. My nephew did not qualify for mental health services after being molested during my brothers deployment 5y
Cinfhen That‘s terrible @Chrissyreadit I‘m not 100% certain how good Israel is in regards to their vets. But I do know there are TONS of organizations who raise lots of money to help the families & those affected. Unfortunately in this country almost every single citizen has someone in their family who was directly impacted. For a young country they have seen plenty of conflicts 😥 5y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen I am sorry - I do become intense on this topic. It is one of High emotions. But I absolutely honor and respect the sacrifices made by our soldiers and their families. 5y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen one of my first pen pals was from Israel. We lost touch during her turn serving in the military. I have wondered what it looks like for a nation with mandatory service. 5y
Cinfhen It‘s a strange concept. We are currently living here as temporary residents ~ we have not become citizens so my son who is turning 18 in November does not have to serve. I can tell u it‘s complicated because as much as I don‘t want to have a child in the military, I feel a little guilty that my friends children are all serving and risking their lives daily and I sort of get a free pass. While most US kids are thinking of colleges kids here 👇🏼 5y
Cinfhen Are competing/ worrying about what units they will be assigned. It‘s mandatory for all kids 18 / male & female. Its huge amount of pressure on the kids to be placed in certain units. 5y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen I can appreciate the conflict and appreciate you sharing those thoughts. As an aside I wish I had the strength and skill for Krav maga 5y
Cinfhen Yes! Krav Maga is definitely kick ass!!!! 5y

This popped up in kindle daily deals today and it seemed like the perfect #recommendsday choice!

Not only was this made into a badass movie several years back, it's an outstanding, harrowing book about infantry combat during the Vietnam War.

Hollie I use this film in my US History class and my students love it. Excellent book! 7y
