This is choc full of bookish quotes and whimsical drawings.

It is often much harder to get rid of books then it is to acquire them.

Every year I give away fifty of them to my students, yet I still cannot avoid putting in another double row of shelves; the books are advancing innocently through my house. There is no way I can stop them.

MrBook lol! Sounds like my place. 😆 5y

I found this little gem at our newly renovated library today, it goes very well with a bottle of Bordeaux I purchased at the local liquor store, that could do with a renovation itself. So far I‘m intrigued by book and vintage!

LiterRohde @TK-421 Thanks. It‘s been real lately. I‘ve had four surgeries over the last half of September and the first half of October. And two septic blood infections because of the surgeries. And all the while I‘m going back to work teaching 9th graders. Oh. And not getting paid for most of it as my employer has the absolute worst sick day policy. And now the bills are rolling in. On the plus side, I am feeling better finally. (edited) 5y
TK-421 Oh, man! Thanks for your brave & honest reply about your struggles. Sorry you‘ve had to go through all of this-that‘s a rough couple of months! I‘m glad to hear that you‘re feeling better, though, and I hope things get easier for you soon! I hope it helps a little to know there are people here who care about you & miss your posts but also understand when you need to step back & take a break. Sending virtual hugs & my best wishes for you 🤗 5y

Love ?! This little novella imagines a scenario where bibliomania is carried too far. But lots we can relate to, also.

Sís ‘s illustrations throughout are more symbolic rather than literal descriptions of the text.

I believe this is the only English translation of Carlos María Domínguez‘s works (he‘s an Argentine native living in Uruguay).

This is apparently out of print ?, but worth hunting down an used copy which is still affordable.

Pruzy Intriguing! 5y

"Books change people's destinies. Some have read The Tiger of Malaysia and become professors of literature in remote universities. Demian converted tens of thousands of young men to Eastern philosophy, Hemingway made sportsmen of them, Alexander Dumas complicated the lives of thousands of women, quite a few of whom were saved from suicide by cookbooks."

Love the Peter Sís illustrations throughout this little gem â¤ï¸

The third item from my ThriftBooks order arrived today!

I wanted to read this ever since mention in a book about books (tagged ?). This little novella is “....a tribute to the strange and passionate relationship between people and their books†(inside flap).

Illustrated by Peter Sís.

#TBRtemptation “Bluma Lennon, distinguished professor of Latin American literature at Cambridge, is hit by a car while crossing the street, immersed in a volume of Emily Dickinson. Several months after, a package arrives for her from Argentina-a copy of a Conrad novel, encrusted in cement and inscribed with a mysterious dedication. Bluma's successor in the department travels to Buenos Aires to track down the sender, who seems to have disappeared..

batsy Sounds great! 7y
GatheringBooks this was the only south american author mentioned in susan hill‘s reading memoir and this has also gone to my tbr stack on goodreads. :) 7y
ephemeralwaltz @GatheringBooks oh I see! Yes, I saw you shelved it! I need to read more South American literature. 7y

Pickpick

An unusual #quickread, this novella is about a London based professor traveling to Uruguay in search of the story of a book sent to a departed colleague, but this book is really a lovely mediation on the love of reading and the nature of book ownership. Very quotable. With a Uruguayan author and setting, great option for #Uruguay if anyone is doing a #readingtheworld challenge!

This book is packed with quotable lines about the love of books and reading.

"Nobody wants to mislay a book. We prefer to lose a ring, a watch, our umbrella, rather than a book whose pages we will never read again, but which retains, just in the sound of its title, a remote and perhaps long-lost emotion." (Illustration by Peter Sis)
