Planets | Gail Gibbons
3 posts
From the burning surface of Venus to the freezing darkness of Neptune, Gail Gibbons takes children on a tour of our planetary neighbors--which are very different from each other in size, shape, orbit, and even weather. Since The Planets was first published in 1993, space exploration has resulted in many new achievements and discoveries. This new edition of The Planets reflects some of these wondrous advances, while still offering young readers a timeless and accessible look at our solar system.

We're supposed to be reading a book about the planets. In reality, Nina is telling us everything she knows about space, gravity, why the earth is hard (because there's dirt under the grass, of course!), and so much more... Did you know that the reason we can't live on Mercury is because it's too hot for our feet?! "You can't wear sandals!" ???

This NF picture book “The Planets” by Gail Gibbons would be great for PR. This is a great book to introduce students to the subject of the solar system. This book discusses in detail the movements, location, and characteristics of the nine known planets of our solar system, and at the same time it includes very eye-catching illustrations along each page. Even though this book hasn‘t won any awards, Gail Gibbons, author of more than one hundred

RossoS books, is the winner of the Washington Post/Children‘s Book Guild Award for her overall contribution to children‘s nonfiction literature. I‘ve included a website that will take you to a teacher‘s guide created by the author of this book. This guide provides great lesson ideas that you could use to extend learning in your classrooms such as a research project or fun activities like “Postcards from Space” in which students get to create travel 6y
RossoS brochures and postcards from any planet they choose. http://www.gailgibbons.com/pdf/teachers_guide_interior.pdf Finally, the UDL guideline 3.1- actívate background knowledge, as well as the ESOL strategy 50- for content comprehension use a variety of comprehension activities, could both be met through a PR of this book, by using advanced organizers such as a KWL chart so that students can share what they know about the nine planets of our solar 6y

DrSpalding Gibbons is one of the best children‘s authors for non-fiction. She has so many great books for your classroom library! What a great book to use in your science lessons. Good choice. 6y
