American Elsewhere
American Elsewhere | Robert Jackson Bennett
11 posts | 16 read | 29 to read
Some places are too good to be true. Under a pink moon, there is a perfect little town not found on any map. In that town, there are quiet streets lined with pretty houses, houses that conceal the strangest things. After a couple years of hard traveling, ex-cop Mona Bright inherits her long-dead mother's home in Wink, New Mexico. And the closer Mona gets to her mother's past, the more she understands that the people of Wink are very, very different ... From one of our most talented and original new literary voices comes the next great American supernatural novel: a work that explores the dark dimensions of the hometowns and the neighbors we thought we knew.

Thanks for the tags @Gissy and @jenniferw88 !! Fun!

You‘re supposed to tag a favorite book that starts with that letter ☺️ #AlphabetGame #LetterA Great idea @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks !

I can never pick just 1 - here are some that start with A! Since I‘m behind, I‘ll go ahead and post my B and C next 😁

Not all of these are universally liked, but they are all ones I‘ve loved. 🥰🥰

Pickpick

I took a long time to read this one, because I didn't want it to be over. This is a great mix of cosmic horror, new weird, mystery, and story about finding oneself. The writing is a fabulous mix of hilarity and beautiful passages. This is so weird and wonderful, and you should just jump in without much more information than that.

No, that's fine. I didn't want to read the last 200 pages tonight anyway, Leia.

Thank fuck it's Friday. It's time to relax, have some good beer, and read weird books.

Bookzombie I second the “Thank fuck it‘s Friday.” 🙂 5y

Up next! I got American Elsewhere for my birthday five or six years ago, and I'm finally going to read it. I'm pretty excited to jump into this one.

Mehso-so

I'm giving this one a so-so. The idea was a good one, but I found the writing to be lacking. It was off to a good start, but the end was pretty messy and jumbled. Definitely had some plot holes.
My main issue with it was his overuse of analogies. I understand the use of them as a writing tool for "supernatural" concepts, but damn Bennett, don't you have anything else in that toolbox?

#ReadingResolutions : Literally the only book I have that has anything resembling #windows on it. I haven‘t read this one, but I loved the author‘s Divine Cities books.

Pickpick

Everyone has certain tropes they eat up and creepy small towns is one of mine. I really liked this slow burn horror novel and when Stranger Things came out a few months after I read this, I immediately thought fans if one might enjoy the other.

#strangerthings #horror

annkuch13 Nice recommendation! I love his work but haven't picked this one up yet! 8y
DeeLew I'm watching Stranger Things right now! This is my third time. I will have to get this book. 😊 8y
