A Sorrowful Sanctuary
A Sorrowful Sanctuary: A Lane Winslow Mystery | Iona Whishaw
6 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
In the fifth book of the series that the Globe and Mailcalls "terrific," Lane Winslow investigates the murder of an unidentified man she found adrift in a boat near King's Cove. Lane Winslow is enjoying a perfect, sunny day at the lake when she spots a gravely injured young man drifting in a sinking rowboat. Hypothermic, bleeding, and soaked in icy, bloody water, he is unable to speak, leaving Lane at a loss. What series of events brought him to this grisly fate? Darling and Ames are quick to pick up the case, but leads are few until Angela's young son finds an unsettling clue on the beach--a bright red swastika lapel pin--that points to the National Unity Party of Canada. When the anonymous man succumbs to his injuries, Darling and Lane are thrown headlong into a murder investigation with ties to the old country. Fans of Maisie Dobbs, Bess Crawford, and the ever-popular Kopp Sisters will be enchanted by Lane Winslow, a clever, no-nonsense sleuth based on the author's own mother, who was a wartime spy.

Number 5 in this historical mystery series set in post WWII British Columbia, this one covers three cases: burglaries, murder and a missing person. Could they all be connected? Some dual-time lining and at times a bit convoluted in the plot. This one also offered more of a look into Lane‘s and Darling‘s relationship and where they each hoped (or not) to be heading. A good addition to an excellent series. 4.25/5⭐️

Finished book 4 in the Lane Winslow series!

I really liked this one. Lane and Darling‘s relationship is growing more and I‘m really liking it.

This mystery seemed a little bit more low stakes than the others. Lane was never really in danger, so it was nice and cozy.

#5 of the Lane Winslow series and just as good as the rest. Love the setting, the now familiar & much loved characters and, as always, a good mystery to solve.
My son has a fever, so I get an unexpected day off. On to the next book while he sleeps.

While I think, for me, the mystery fizzled at the end, and it went on longer than I felt necessary I still absolutely love Lane, Darling and Ames. Their banter is so comfortable and fresh. I'm looking forward to continuing with the series - I have #6 waiting here for me.

I've got this #5 and then #6 to read before April. Which is no problem because this is an immensely enjoyable mystery series!

Another excellent mystery from Iona Whishaw! These characters just get more engaging with every book in the series. The mystery in this one was great - full of smarmy characters and good sleuthing. I really enjoy this series and can‘t wait for the next one! I voluntarily reviewed a copy provided by the publisher.
