Take Nothing with You
Take Nothing with You | PATRICK. GALE
7 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
From the bestselling author of A PLACE CALLED WINTER comes a new novel of boyhood, coming of age, and the confusions of desire and reality. For all readers of Ian McEwan's ATONEMENT or L P Hartley's THE GO-BETWEEN. 1970s Weston-Super-Mare and ten-year-old oddball Eustace, an only child, has life transformed by his mother's quixotic decision to sign him up for cello lessons. Music-making brings release for a boy who is discovering he is an emotional volcano. He laps up lessons from his young teacher, not noticing how her brand of glamour is casting a damaging spell over his frustrated and controlling mother. When he is enrolled in holiday courses in the Scottish borders, lessons in love, rejection and humility are added to daily practice. Drawing in part on his own boyhood, Patrick Gale's new novel explores a collision between childish hero worship and extremely messy adult love lives.

Wonderful writing, very interesting read, one rather odd passage/episode but otherwise as brilliant as always.

Another one of Gale's brilliant books.
This tells of a man who recounts his younger life whilst falling in love.
Super excited about going to hear Gale speak in a few weeks 😊😊😊

I loved this story of Eustace, an only child struggling at school who falls in love with cello playing, and follows his coming of age through the messy teenage years and increasingly complicated family life. Sad, gentle, hopeful; perfectly written and with a great cast of characters.

TrishB I loved this too 👍🏻 3y
MrsMalaprop I love Patrick Gale ❤️ 3y
JillR @MrsMalaprop I‘ve only read two of his books but enjoyed them both :) 3y

Oh god this book. Properly broke me,left feeling all wibbly. Just some of the most heartbreaking beautiful evocative prose I've ever read. Gay,sad, happy and ultimately hopeful and really makes you want to go listen to cello music. One of the best literary fiction works I've ever read by someone not named Alan Hollinghurst.

TrishB I‘ve loved all of Gale‘s books so far - read 3 and working my way through the rest! 5y
thebeercolonel @TrishB Yes, I think I'm going to have to start on his back catalogue asap. 5y

Somewhere between a pick and so-so.
Liked - the MC and most of the other main characters - except his Mum. The majority of the story - especially the twists - though sometimes the MC was very naive - where we all that naive at 14? The writing is lovely too.
Didn‘t like - sometimes the music bits didn‘t do anything for me - to the point of just being boring. BUT I don‘t play an instrument and it just felt like too much information...
