#JazzyJune #BandWBooks

I only have the first four volumes of this manga series (so far) but the alternating black and white spines always catch my eye at the bookstore when they are all lined up.

The cover art is also pretty amazeballs. To be honest, those two things are what made me even give the series a go in the first place. 😊

Sweetkokoro Ah I love Deadman Wonderland! I dig the alternating spine colors too! 5y

This book is so good! Warning: there is plenty of violence and gore, so avoid this series if that's not your thing. The story takes place in a theme park/prison built to raise funds after Tokyo is destroyed. The prisoners "put on shows" to entertain the guests. The main character Ganta is sent to Deadman Wonderland after he is sentenced to death for murders he didn't commit. It has Hunger Games vibes and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Sace Just saw your suggestion. Stacked! 7y

I somehow let my library card expire (whoops!), so I went in to renew it. I somehow ended up coming out with four books due to the fact that they put the #manga right next to the door. Oh well, I guess my TBR stack will have to wait.

Going into this title knowing nothing about it, expecting nothing, I still left disappointed. The plot is a convoluted mess, seemingly made up as it goes. The characters are thrown at you left and right, but no investment is made in making them interesting. It's violent and crass and desperately 'shocking', but there is no sense to any of it so it reads as really boring.

The series does pick up by the third volume, but not by much. Pass.

The plot was a mess, the characters bland and uninteresting, but what really got me with the uneven and mismatched tone. Is it going for cute or uncomfortable? Dark and disturbing, or cheery and off the wall? It seems like the author can't decide what they want the story to be, but want to make doubly sure it's 'shocking'.
