Atlas Alone | Emma Newman
7 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
Hugo Award winner Emma Newman returns to the captivating Planetfall universe with a novel about vengeance, and a woman deciding if she can become a murderer to save the future of humanity. Six months after she left Earth, Dee is struggling to manage her rage toward the people who ordered the nuclear strike that destroyed the world. She's trying to find those responsible, and to understand why the ship is keeping everyone divided into small groups, but she's not getting very far alone. A dedicated gamer, she throws herself into mersives to escape and is approached by a designer who asks her to play test his new game. It isn't like any game she's played before. Then a character she kills in the climax of the game turns out to bear a striking resemblance to a man who dies suddenly in the real world at exactly the same time. A man she discovers was one of those responsible for the death of millions on Earth. Disturbed, but thinking it must be a coincidence, Dee pulls back from gaming and continues the hunt for information. But when she finds out the true plans for the future colony, she realizes that to save what is left of humanity, she may have to do something that risks losing her own.

I loved every other book in this series but just could NOT get into this one. Most of the plot seems to take place in an immersive RPG, and I was not really into that. Loved every other book in the series, though!

He‘d looked so hurt. “I‘m not like those other men, you know?”
“Then you won‘t mind if I say no,” I said.

4/5⭐ For me, the weakest of the series so far (though given I still rated it a solid 4 stars, it's by no means weak). That ending though, HOLY CRAP. 😲 I really hope Newman writes more in this series, because I can't get enough.

MC's characterization wasn't as believable to me as the other books - oddly both paranoid and reckless. But it knits together at the end.

Currently my favorite ongoing SF series - dunno why it's so under read. At least it does have some other reviews here.

Oh SHIIIIIII ... ZZLE. The end! The entire book! Aahhhhahhaahahahahahahahhhhh it begins six months after the shock end of After Atlas, & now Dee has to deal with her entire life ... and a secretive organization, and a deadly secret entity, on the ship. Not the ending I‘d expected and also clearly, this series is gonna continue. More than a quartet! #sciencefiction

Whoops, I tagged the wrong book a minute ago! It‘s this one that is the end of the quartet ... or maybe just the fourth in a series, idk! In any case, looking forward to it. #sciencefiction
