The Assassin's Curse
The Assassin's Curse | Cassandra Rose Clarke
14 posts | 31 read | 39 to read
Ananna of the Tanarau abandons ship when her parents try to marry her off to an allying pirate clan: she wants to captain her own boat, not serve as second-in-command to her handsome yet clueless fiance. But her escape has dire consequences when she learns the scorned clan has sent an assassin after her. And when the assassin, Naji, finally catches up with her, things get even worse. Ananna inadvertently triggers a nasty curse with a life-altering result. Now Ananna and Naji are forced to become uneasy allies as they work together to break the curse and return their lives back to normal. Or at least as normal as the lives of a pirate and an assassin can be.

I enjoyed this a lot, despite complaints to @TheAromaofBooks about characters who refuse to explain what‘s going on with the magic 😆 The characters are pretty shallow but there‘s plenty of forward momentum, Ananna is brave and resourceful, and I loved the worldbuilding. I don‘t think much of the romance or the villains, and it really didn‘t feel complete, but I‘ve put the sequel on hold so I can get the rest of the story and see the curse broken!

Clare-Dragonfly Also: This was my #doublespin for February. Also-also: I am oddly proud that my review came out to exactly 451 characters with no effort 😂 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! And I have no idea how it feels to have a review come out exactly right since I usually seem to add about five comments to fit in all my whining 😂 2y

It took a lot of determination to finish this. I liked the plot, the characters, even if they were shallow and not very well developed, and I liked some concepts of the magic. However the writing was so repetitive and simple, I found myself becoming bored quickly. Also, not a huge amount happened in this book, it was just setting itself up for the next part of this duology. However I did like the sort of slow burn romance, but it seemed a bit off.

So far so good, writing is a bit off though, but I love the relationship between Ananna and Naji 🥰

I seem to be one of the few who did not enjoy this book; she annoyed the crap out of me! I think I‘m just too old for these heroines.

This was entertaining, a fun light read. Pros: good world building, nice character growth, exciting plot. The heroine is smart, but uneducated, leaving room for growth in subsequent books. Cons: Being the first in the series and written 1st person from the heroine‘s point of view, the reader spends a lot of the book in ignorance.

The way the main character spoke annoyed me a bit but it was in keeping with her being a pirate 🏴 Straightforward plot and simple to follow. I'm not disappointed because it engaged me and I wanted to read it but I'm also not 100% eager to move on the the novella and sequel

I read in several places when I have time but my nook is my bed where my TBR sits, I have power outlets for my phone and ereader, natural lighting and if I need an eye break, I can look directly up to my shelves or one of the awesome Nightmare Before Christmas paintings we have on the wall

The more I think about this, the more frustrating I find it. The world sounds marvelous, but we spend the whole book wrapped up inside the relationship of the two main characters. And it's a forced one, which is problematic at best. Ananna is brave and willful and independent and deserves better than to be sometimes literally bound to a man because she saved his life. That right there is a huge issue. I hope some of this is resolved in book 2...
