Courtney's War
Courtney's War | Wilbur Smith
9 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
The brand new Courtney Series novel, and the much-anticipated sequel to the global bestseller WAR CRY Paris, 1939. Torn apart by war, Saffron Courtney and Gerhard von Meerbach are thousands of miles apart, both struggling for their lives. Gerhard - despite his objections to the Nazi regime - is fighting for the Fatherland, hoping to one day have the opportunity to rid Germany of Hitler and his cronies. But as his unit is thrown into the hellish attrition of the Battle of Stalingrad, he knows his chances of survival are dwindling by the day. Meanwhile Saffron - recruited by the Special Operations Executive and sent to occupied Belgium to discover how the Nazis have infiltrated SOE's network - soon finds herself being hunted by Germany's most ruthless spymaster. Confronted by evil beyond their worst imaginings, the lovers must each make the hardest choice of all: sacrifice themselves, or do whatever they can to survive, hoping that one day they will be reunited. Courtney's War is an epic story of courage, betrayal and undying love that takes the reader to the very heart of a world at war.

Pickpick

I'm struggling to review this one! It's definitely a pick - it was a gripping read, and Saffron Courtney was an engaging main character. Occasionally it was uncomfortable to read as fiction, dealing with the start of the holocaust, and undercover work that required Nazi viewpoints to be expressed. The storyline at times felt just a little far-fetched. But overall it's a well-told page-turner.

rockpools My other quibble, despite the strong female lead, is the writing of women, which at times felt ... shall we say old-fashioned? It probably won't pass the Bechdel test by more than a hair's breadth. But it was incredibly readable! 6y

April 1939.Saffron & Gerhard are in Paris& in love. When war breaks out, he has no option but to join the Luftwaffe, whatever he believes in. She, meanwhile, trains with the most secret of Whitehall departments. Many bullets are fired, by & at our heroes. It's only a matter of time before one of them's #BitinTheBullet. I'm regularly muttering 'overblown nonsense' at this one, but it's absolutely the book I'm most enjoying right now. #octoberxfiles

Cinfhen I think my hubby might enjoy this one... @TrishB have u read it??? 6y

I've been struggling to read over the last few months- attention span of a gnat! Apparently the answer to this is a Big, Bold, Fast-Moving Old-Fashioned wartime adventure story.

Yep, I was surprised too. Thanks to #readersfirst for a free copy of this one.

JazzFeathers Well, this does sound awesome. Staked 😄 6y
