We bought this book because our 4 year old has been bringing up Toby (our dog who passed last spring) lately. This book is about a boy and his dog as they grow up together. In the end the dog dies and it ends on a note that he may get another pet in the future when he is ready. It is a great book that opened up dialogue with our son on what happened to Toby and how there are other boys who have lost their dogs too. Also, he now wants a turtle 🙄.

tpixie Sweet story. I‘m glad you found a good book for this diverticula time. A turtle 🐢 lol 😂 3y
Jess861 @tpixie Yes - it was nice to find a book that helped him realize he wasn't alone in losing a dog. The last page has a picture of different pets and that is where he got the idea of a turtle. I told him if he still wants one when he is 10 we'll talk about it 😂 3y
tpixie @Jess861 * difficult not diverticula ( my editor was sleeping still) 🤗. Lol 😂 10 yo smart!! (edited) 3y

tpixie @Jess861 ok I guess this book caught my attention for a reason. We lost our little peekapoo dog 2 nights ago. It‘s cold, there are woods and coyotes out there. I think I‘ll need to get this book sooner than later 😌 But I‘m NOT GETTING A TURTLE 🐢 💗💗 3y
Jess861 @tpixie oh no - I'm so sorry to hear about your dog! It is always so hard to lose a pet - my thoughts are with you guys!

And yes - I wouldn't suggest a turtle....our little guy is still talking about it a week later 😬

This TL book is so cute! It‘s about a dog and it‘s owner. The owner loves his dog, Elfie, very much. It‘s a super adorable book, it‘s very sad at the end though.

This is another video of the book being RA. It‘s a great read aloud to put in the projector during class.

ally11301 An ESOL strategy that aligns is #11 because death is such a big a meaningful context that students should start learning slowly. This book is about the dog passing at the end but that no matter what the owner will always love him. 5y
ally11301 An UDL that aligns with this book would be 3.1 which is to activate or supply background knowledge. Some of the students will have some sort of background on the topic of death but this book will help emphasize that. 5y
Zmohammad This is such a great book and I think using the UDL principle 3.1 to activate background knowledge is a great source to implement. 5y

JessicaRosell Books about love are my favorite! And even though it's about tradegy , children need a way to understand and deal with it. It's not only up to parents! It's up to us teachers as well! ♡ thanks for the book add! 5y
Kcallihan This book looks so cute! I‘ve never heard of it before but I think it seems like a helpful way to teach kids how to handle a tragedy. Good post!! 5y
DrSpalding This is such a sweet story… Sad yet sweet. 5y

Sweet, well-handled story about the death of a pet. I love that it follows the child and the dog as they grow together, and the love between the two is palpable. It ends on a hopeful note, as well.

#ReadingResolutions Day 19: Accdg to Fats‘ review entitled “Of #Dogs, Children, and the Grief that Divides Them” she observed how Wilhelm brilliantly handles a sensitive topic and delivers it with ease as he shows children – through Elfie and her human child – that death is a natural process. It shows that death is inevitable, and it doesn‘t always end in a tragic way. Full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-61g
