With 10mins left to go, I think this will be my final book started in the #JubilantJuly #readathon & my final time. This is another NF audiobook about the Cold War, but this is about the weapons held by the players in it & what happened to them once the USSR broke apart. I‘m only about 8 chapters in but it‘s already given me flashback nightmares to my childhood & how terrified of nuclear war I was. Petrifying💣😱🤯
This was an engrossing look at the history of arms control and the Cold War, full of harrowing stories of near misses and missed opportunities. The interaction between Reagan and Gorbachev was really interesting, but it was the details of the Soviet biological weapons program that really made this book hard to put down. Hoffman also relates how command and control of nuclear weapons evolved over time--scary stuff indeed.
