The Old Man and the Gun
The Old Man and the Gun: And Other Tales of True Crime | David Grann
5 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
Now a major motion picture starring Robert Redford and Sissy Spacek, from the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Killers of the Flower Moon, The Old Man and the Gun is here joined by two other riveting true crime tales. "The Old Man and the Gun," is the story of a man who idolized the likes of Pretty Boy Floyd and, as a result, fashions himself into a notorious bank robber and escape artist. "The Chameleon" is the tale a French con artist gets in over his head when he impersonates a missing Texas teenager and raises the suspicions of a local private investigator. "True Crime" follows a riveting investigation in which a Polish cold-case detective makes an unlikely connection between a philosopher's novel and the murder case he's trying to crack. Grann takes the reader on a journey through some of the strangest and most thrilling real life stories of felonious behavior from around the world.

2020 stats: 2020 was good for my reading goals as I generally find fantasy worlds to be soothing escapes! Still, I'm proud of my progress towards reading more diverse books and more recent publications and I'm looking forward to more of the same in 2021. I also have plans to work with my tbr, and read the books I bought instead of abandoning them when something new and shiny crosses my path! Time to #jumpintojanuary #2020books

I cannot remember where I heard about David Grann but he was mentioned in one of the books I read recently. As a result I bought this one and one of his better known books. This one was short and interesting. Three different sections of different crime stories that happened. I found it fun and entertaining.

It is a testament to David Grann's talents as a writer that I enjoyed the hell out of this one, despite being acquainted with two of the three cases. "True Crime" was a reread as I originally read it in Best American Crime Writing & I was familiar with the case in "The Chameleon" thanks to the documentary The Imposter. At around 130 pages, I really wish there were more true crime collections like this that could be read in a day.

This is a collection of 3 fascinating true crime tales - The Old Man And The Gun, True Crime & The Chameleon.

I enjoyed Grann's writing. It is always engaging, entertaining, and well-researched. If you enjoy this book, I'd recommend The Devil & Sherlock Holmes - an anthology of twelve true crime stories which also includes the above three stories.

Rating: 5⭐

vivastory @Reviewsbylola There were several titles that I was tempted by. I end up buying the tagged book, which I was completely unaware of 5y
Reviewsbylola I do love David Grann but that one doesn‘t seem to include any murders so he kind of lost my attention. 🤣🤣 5y
