Hark
Hark | Sam Lipsyte
9 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
A brilliant send-up of our contemporary culture from Sam Lipsyte, the critically acclaimed author of Home Land, centered around an unwitting mindfulness guru and the phenomenon he initiates. In an America convulsed by political upheaval, cultural discord, environmental collapse, and spiritual confusion, many folks are searching for peace, salvation, and--perhaps most immediately--just a little damn focus. Enter Hark Morner, an unwitting guru whose technique of "Mental Archery"--a combination of mindfulness, mythology, fake history, yoga, and, well, archery--is set to captivate the masses and raise him to near-messiah status. It's a role he never asked for, and one he is woefully underprepared to take on. But his inner-circle of modern pilgrims have other plans, as do some suddenly powerful fringe players, including a renegade Ivy League ethicist, a gentle Swedish kidnapper, a crossbow-hunting veteran of jungle drug wars, a social media tycoon with an empire on the skids, and a mysteriously influential (but undeniably slimy) catfish. In this social satire of the highest order, Sam Lipsyte, the New York Times bestseller and master of the form, reaches new peaks of daring in a novel that revels in contemporary absurdity and the wild poetry of everyday language while exploring the emotional truths of his characters. Hark is a smart, incisive look at men, women, and children seeking meaning and dignity in a chaotic, ridiculous, and often dangerous world.

One week away and only 8 books bought… 😬 All except The Ten Thousand Doors of January were total whims. So I would love to know if you have read any of them? All except Life Between the Tides (which I bought from Lyme Regis bookshop) were second hand. A holiday isn‘t a holiday without some unnecessary book buying!

What‘s on your TBR list? The Art or Leaving is still on mine along with Writer‘s Digest Guide to Magazine Article Writing, The Art of Gathering, Fashionopolis, Crisis Caravan, How Fascism Works, White Kids, and The Secrets We Kept. How will I find the time? 🤔😩

mikewoodsham1 My TBR list is so big, I could stop buying books today and still not have time to read them all! 🌷 5y

I've enjoyed his books in the past so I'm going to try this one. Guru's are a troublesome concept for me so I'm thinking this satire could interest me......but first I must finish with The Talented Mr Ripley! #beyourownguru #furballsoflitsy

Mehso-so

A satirical look on the self-help, mindful meditation movement. (Hear that, Deepak Chopra?) The protagonist Hark uses the simple idea of mental archery that takes on a life of it's own. Cult like with a smart marketing tool makes it a success. Very disjointed with characters and plot, it is either hit or miss. Personally, I found it okay.

This inexplicably came in the mail from Simon and Schuster. I'm pretty sure I won it in a drawing on LitHub which...awesome. I just don't need to be adding books to my #tbr shelf right now. I've heard mixed reviews about this one. Anyone read it?

Lauren.Archer I am curious on the feedback on this one. He did a long interview with Mark Maron on his podcast. Real interesting guy. 6y
DannyOlda I'll definitely give it a read @Lauren.Archer and try to leave a review here. Also really interested in anyone's feedback. 6y
DannyOlda ... And will listen to the podcast episode tonight, thanks for mentioning it, @Lauren.Archer ! 6y
