The Lines We Leave Behind
The Lines We Leave Behind | Eliza Graham
6 posts | 5 read | 19 to read
England, 1947: A young woman finds herself under close observation in an insane asylum, charged with a violent crime she has no memory of committing. As she tries to make sense of her recent past, she recalls very little. But she still remembers wartime in Yugoslavia. There she and her lover risked everything to carry out dangerous work resisting the Germans--a heroic campaign in which many brave comrades were lost. After that, the trail disappears into confusion. How did she come to be trapped in a living nightmare? As she struggles to piece together the missing years of her life, she will have to confront the harrowing experiences of her special-operations work and peacetime marriage. Only then can she hope to regain the vital memories that will uncover the truth: is she really a violent criminal...or was she betrayed?

Was expecting a generic WW2 romance, got something rather more substantial. This is a well-written & engaging novel about a young woman's experiences of being recruited by an enigmatic man for a spy mission in Yugoslavia. I enjoyed the revealing of her story, the various little twists, the moral complexity of the characters, the grittiness. Loved that the happy ending managed to be neither cheesy nor twee. A solid page turner.

shanaqui Huh, sounds intriguing! 2y

Which is worse, fellow Littens, a book that is bad from the get-go or one that starts off strong but then deteriorates? I've read a lot of the latter just recently - I'm always left feeling slightly conned! This one is starting strong so I'm hoping it's the one one to buck this unpleasant trend!

Bookwomble Yeah, I think if rather hate it from the outset and bail than get interested and have it fizzle out after investing time. 2y
Ruthiella Agree with @Bookwomble ! I‘d rather be disappointed sooner than later. 2y

Book #81. Not that it matters. I‘m way behind on my goodreads reading challenge and I‘m fine with that. 😁

vumblereads @Scochrane26 I agree but I‘ve also had a number of guilty reads 😂 and I don‘t regret it. 4y
Scochrane26 @vumblereads I have too this year. I have read more books this yr than any other, but I don‘t feel the need to compare w/ others. I just read what I can & enjoy it, not worried about the number. 4y

Bailedbailed

I started listening to this one and just can‘t get into it. I made it 34% and I just can‘t make it another 7 hours. I rarely bail on a book, but I had to. It sounded so good so I‘m a little sad about this one...but that means I‘m free to start a new #audiobook 😁

This surprised me a bit - Kindle First picks don‘t tend to be as solidly plotted or written as this book, which is something of a spy novel combined with a thriller combined with, well, WWII and what the British (and Americans) did to partisans to ensure more compliant, aka fascist, governments after the war. Pretty good and somewhat horrifying historical spy thriller about a woman trying to remember why she tried to stab her husband. 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
