Today is a rest day for me. I injured my left ankle so I‘ve been doing R.I.C.E. (rest-ice-compression-elevate) and meds for it.

Despite the injury, I managed to make some Pao de Queijo. It‘s pretty easy. I love the chewiness of it. Usually my go to cheese is feta but I used Parmesan and mozzarella this time around.

I‘m slowly reading the fourth book of The Dalemark Quartet. Since it‘s the last book, I don‘t want it to end too soon.

BookNAround Those look yummy. I love anything with cheese! 4m

Saw this post from @booksandbedandtea and decided to have fun with it too!

I would keep: my books, my cat and tea! Love tea!

I‘m currently reading #thecrownofdalemark from #thedalemarkquartet . It‘s the fourth and last book of the series. And I‘m so happy to be reading about Mitt again!

The hardest part of being a bookworm is when you feel so excited about a certain series but nobody you know has read it. So you can‘t really talk to anyone about it except to air it out in social media. Another struggle is finding the people who actually like to read #highfantasy. It‘s a lonely world out here 😅 #soloreads

So far I‘ve given the first 2 books of the series, 5 stars! Diana Wynne Jones is a badass fantasy author!

Cailey_Mac I‘ve never heard of this series, but I definitely wanna give it a try! I definitely know that struggle though; usually my boyfriend and best friend let me gush about it but they have no clue what I‘m talking about 😅 2d
BethM I looooove fantasy! I‘ve never read this series but I‘ve read some of her other work! 2d
vumblereads @cailey_mac yes please do and please tell me what you think! Yes I do have people to talk to but it‘s either they‘re not book people or if they are, they‘re very mainstream book people 😅 2d
See All 18 Comments
vumblereads @BethM do you have ang recommendations? 😁 2d
CoffeeCatsBooks I have her Howl‘s Moving Castle, but I haven‘t read any of her other books. I also love fantasy books. 📚 2d
vumblereads @CoffeeCatsBooks Oh yay another fantasy fan! I have the Studio Ghibli dvd and the book too of Howls Moving Castle. I first knew about Diana Wynne Jones because of the Studio Ghibli movie. I haven‘t read the book version though but I‘ve heard the series is really good too. 2d
Cailey_Mac @vumblereads ooo I will try to read these soon! And I deff understand that😅 2d
Deifio I read mostly fantasy, never heard of this series! Stack add! I have my sister and mother to talk about and trade fantasy books, I"m really lucky! ? 2d
vumblereads @deifio lucky! But good to know there‘s a few folks on Litsy who read fantasy 😄 2d
BethM If you‘re looking for “high” fantasy go with Patrick Rothfuss‘ king killer chronicles- they‘re exceptional. 2d
vumblereads @BethM I‘ve heard about the King Killer Chronicles. He‘s definitely in my TBR! Thank you! 2d
Scochrane26 What‘s high fantasy compared with fantasy? Just curious. 2d
vumblereads @scochrane26 😄 It‘s a subcategory of Fantasy with a medieval type setting or something that has its own world. Like LOTR and ASOIF 😄 (edited) 2d
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I love fantasy, but fantasy authors do insist upon writing lengthy series I can't keep up with while finishing my PhD! Good thing I got to teach Fantasy Lit a few semesters ago to hold me over. 19h
vumblereads @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards you teach fantasy lit?! Wow 🙌🏼 that‘s the best job ever!!! Your work is your hobby is your work! and I love your username! 😂 19h
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards @vumblereads It was a lot of fun! We did tons of creative projects like remixing Shaun Tan's graphic novel The Arrival to tell different stories in that same fantasy universe, and talked with the Jim Henson archivist and saw some of his work in the university's collection. 19h
vumblereads Oh my!!!! How could I have forgotten about Shaun Tan!!!! I remember seeing his book on Goodreads and I‘ve just totally forgotten about it! He had another graphic novel too.... 🧐 and you guys were remixing? that sounds like fun! This is why I need to quit my job and major in English lit 😂 19h

It‘s starting to get really interesting and so far it‘s been very unpredictable. I never imagined a children‘s book to be dark and gloomy. My type of story!

#fantasy

I‘ve first heard of Diana Wynne Jones from the Studio Ghibli flick, “Howl‘s Moving Castle”. I was curious to read her other books, and I‘m happy to say it still holds the same magical feeling as I had with Howl‘s Moving Castle.

Any D.W. Jones fans out there?

vumblereads @chaoticgoodhufflepuff I‘ve heard about that book! I‘m adding it to my TBR. I don‘t know why she‘s not a mainstream author! I‘m liking her stories so far. 4d

1984 | George Orwell
Mehso-so

Finished this book a couple days ago. I wasn‘t overwhelmed to be honest. And it could be because I set the bar too high. Orwell discusses the same concept with Animal Farm, wherein there‘s always a higher and lower society and that history always ends up “changing”. If you ask me, both are similar and unique in a way. But #animalfarm is still my favorite.

rretzler Interesting take. I read both books many years ago, and 1984 was one of my favorites. I always felt that Animal Farm was Orwell's commentary on the politics of that time (more specifically the Russian revolution,) while 1984, having some similarities, was his take on where he felt the future might be going. I have found it prophetic in many ways over the years as we sacrifice personal freedom for “protection“, especially as technology is developed 6mo
vumblereads @rretzler Yes I think that‘s a big discussion revolving around the book. I guess I should give it more credit knowing that it was written earlier than it was 1984. When Winston, the main character, started reading Goldstein‘s book, it reminded me so much of Animal Farm. 🙂 6mo
gilroyc I always felt that 1984 was a touch more subtle than Animal Farm. 6mo
See All 6 Comments
vumblereads Subtle in what way @gilroyc ? 🙂 6mo
gilroyc Personal opinion: Animal Farm is a steady dropping of bricks as the pigs are constantly betraying their original thoughts. 1984 has more of a thriller feel with when and how, so the bricks are slid in, rather than dropped. 6mo
vumblereads @gilroyc 😂 yes they‘re always changing their opinions and everyone else is dumb enough to believe it, but it‘s just like in 1984! One minute they‘re at war with Eurasia, the next they‘re at war with Eastasia and they were never ever at war with eurasia 🤷🏻‍♀️ I get it George Orwell, people lied to you! 😅 6mo

I‘m really struggling with 1984. It picks up and then it drags, on and off. Currently at 54%. I‘m debating whether I should DNF and watch the movie.

Jeralyn I was the same way, but I had to read it for school so I stuck it out. I cannot tell you how mind-blowing the ending is, I literally can't. There's this point in the novel where it tells you everything, things that you didn't even know you were confused about. I would say it's worth the read even though most of it seemed pointlessly sad to me, if you get to the end you will understand why this book is at such a high standing. 6mo
vumblereads @Jeralyn and that‘s really the only reason why it keeps me going, otherwise I would‘ve given up 😅 6mo
Jeralyn After 1984 it was like I understood the world for once and everything made sense. I would say that after all the hype I'm giving it, it's still not one of my favorite books at all, but I definitely think it's one of those books everyone should read. I think that maybe if everyone read it and understood it, the world would change for the better, as long as it's not too far gone that is. 6mo

vumblereads @tonton yes I‘ve heard of those two! I‘ve been eyeing 1Q84 lately, I like the cover 😂 7mo
pdever I had to read the Wikipedia page for Wind-up Bird Chronicle because I didn't remember the violence to such an extent. I guess it is, but it was also so dreamlike that the violence didn't stick with me. I'm currently reading Patti Smith's M Train and she calls it a "devastating book ... wherein the writer seems to infuse living energy into words as the reader is spun, wrung, and hung out to dry" 7mo

vumblereads @katiedid927 😃 nope not from me! 7mo
julesG Hilarious and informative. I read it in small bites. My kids kept asking me, at the dinner table, which darting animals I had read about today. 7mo
julesG Farting 😵😵😵 Autocorrect, I'll strangle you. 7mo
vumblereads @julesG yes it is 😂 I‘m reading about the sea cucumber now 😱 7mo
pdever Last summer I avidly read the biography of a professional flatulist whose act was an outrageous success at The Moulin Rouge!!! He could fart entire songs. 7mo
vumblereads No way @pdever 😄😂 now you got me curious! 7mo
pdever @vumblereads l found it because I watched Blazing Saddles again and the Governor's name is William J Le Petomane... Started looking it up. Talk about extensive fart humor, that movie has it. They would never get away with making anything like it today... So offensive on so many levels. Also hillarious. 7mo
Suet624 @pdever You are so right about Blazing Saddles. I‘ve never laughed so hard watching a movie. And so offensive. So good. (edited) 7mo

Going back to my roots 🌊

suzisteffen Oooh. After having read America Is not the Heart, by Elaine Castillo, and Insurrecto, by Gina Apostol, I think it‘s time to read some history. Thanks for the idea and book reference! 7mo
vumblereads You‘re welcome @suzisteffen 7mo
suzisteffen @vumblereads Elaine Castillo has a new recommended “7 Nonfiction Books about Filipinx America by Pinoy Writers” up on Electric Lit! http://electricliterature.com/7-non-fiction-books-about-filipinx-america-by-pino... 7mo

vumblereads @suzisteffen oh my the website is a treasure trove!!!! Thank you so much for for sharing this with me!!! Truly grateful! 7mo
suzisteffen @vumblereads Unsurprisingly, my library is not running complete on this list, so I‘m going to slowly get my own copies, I guess! Most interested in the one about performers and the one about queer women, but they all look amazing. 7mo
vumblereads @suzisteffen the books are pretty pricey, I might have to borrow them from the library 😅 you might want to check out the Jose Rizal books too if you want to read Filipino classics. They are Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. (edited) 7mo

Eggs | Jerry Spinelli
post image

The story has nothing to do with eggs but you‘ll see eggs splatter in every other scenario. David, the main character also met Primrose in an Easter egg hunt 🤷🏻‍♀️

It‘s establishing some sort of continuation in the story line-Easter egg hunting, David finding eggs splatter on the van. I get it.

For those who have read the book, am I the only person here who thinks that Primrose‘s mom needs to be under CPS investigation? 🤔

mellissimo I don't know the book but the photo is so funny! ^^ I first didn't realise that it was just the cover of a book and thought your cat was sitting behind a real package of eggs. 😂 7mo
vumblereads I know. You‘re not the first person who‘s wondered why I took a picture of eggs. 😄 7mo

Eggs | Jerry Spinelli

Still reading Eggs by Jerry Spinelli. I‘m wondering whether or not I should start posting my reviews here on Litsy instead of Goodreads. Do you guys use both apps? Which app do you prefer to write reviews on? #litsyvsgoodreads #bookreviews

lahousewyfe I use both apps and just copy my Litsy review to my Goodreads account. 7mo
mreads I use both, I write here and usually just star there. A brief synopsis and casual opinion here works better for my style. 7mo
Jemgirl2014 I'm primarily here. I just use goodreads for updating my reading challenge. 7mo
See All 26 Comments
Suet624 I just use Goodreads for the reading challenge. 7mo
rretzler I use LibraryThing, Goodreads and Litsy. Litsy is easier to post quick reviews, but I attempt to get them in all 3 places (using the same review for LT and GR) Always a star rating on LT and GR at a minimum (edited) 7mo
bookishbitch I only post here and on Instagram. I used to do goodreads but stopped. This is easier and more fun for me. Plus it annoys me that goodreads and Amazon are linked. I can't articulate why. It just feels invasive. 7mo
Naj I post reviews only here. Goodreads is just for tracking my reading. 7mo
vumblereads @lahousewyfe I might do that too. The only bad thing about Litsy is that the characters are limited for reviews. 7mo
vumblereads @mreads yes I don‘t always feel like I have to write a full on review. 7mo
vumblereads @suet624 Litsy and Goodreads should combine into one app 😂 there are a couple things I like on goodreads that I can‘t find here on Litsy 7mo
vumblereads @jemgirl2014 yes the reading challenge always draws people back to goodreads 7mo
vumblereads @rretzler I‘ve heard library thing is pretty good too. 7mo
vumblereads @bookishbitch I understand. I personally don‘t find it invasive, but somehow I can‘t escape Amazon and Goodreads since I‘m a kindle user 😂 I eventually got used to my review being here and there and the cookies too. Those terrible cookies. 7mo
vumblereads @naj I would understand why you‘d post reviews here. People are more receptive here than goodreads. 7mo
rretzler IMO LibraryThing is better than Goodreads. Like GR, LT has groups that you can belong to. Some of them, like the 75 Books Challenge, are longstanding and the members of the group are a very welcoming and friendly community. I‘ve tried some of the groups on GR and to me it seems that no one really cares about getting to know you. Plus even though the selection of giveaway books is smaller on LT, it is much easier to get one than on GR. 7mo
Naj @vumblereads Yes, Litsy is a smaller community. More cozy! 7mo
vumblereads @rretzler interesting. I‘ve been joining these giveaways on goodreads since I don‘t know how long and never won a book 😂 and yes I agree with the goodreads community not being warm and friendly. Some of them are even high brow and judgmental IMO, they need to chill out. I might check out library thing one if these days. I know there‘s a way to transfer data without manually putting your books in one by one. 7mo
rretzler I had probably signed up for GR before LT, and I do use both sites daily, but the only reasons I can think of to say why I use GR is because of its year end reading summary graphic and book challenge graphic and because the star ratings of reviews are very slightly better aligned with my star ratings. 7mo
rretzler Sorry, last post and then I‘ll stop. 🤣 Plus Litsy is owned by LT and the LT founder and staff are very approachable. They care and listen to the community and make changes to both platforms based on user feedback. (Not all changes anyone wants, but they do listen). No way that would happen on GR! 😀 Just my thoughts - sorry I rambled! 7mo
vumblereads Oh yes. And I do enjoy looking at my reading stats - tables and graphs of the books you‘ve read. I‘m a fool for graphs and charts 😂 makes me feel smart. My most favorite one is the chart by publication year. The oldest book I‘ve read I think was published in the 30s. 7mo
vumblereads @rretzler 😂 oh you‘re totally fine. Like I mentioned before, this is what I like about Litsy because the community is so receptive. And yes goodreads staff are pretty strict about features to add. I haven‘t gotten over GR getting rid of the MOST READ AUTHORS feature. 7mo
rretzler I didn‘t know that feature was gone. ☹️ I‘m certain that there is a way to do it on LT if you do decide to join. If you have questions about how things work, the members are always happy to help and @lorannen is wonderful at answering questions. And yes, I believe there is a way to export from GR and then import into LT. The other thing about LT that I like is it supports both “shelves”, called collections, and tags. Both are customizable 7mo
Suet624 I‘m in agreement with @bookishbitch I‘m not happy that Amazon owns Goodreads and I stay completely away from Amazon. So I‘d hate to see Litsy be associated with Goodreads. 7mo
Jemgirl2014 @vumblereads True! It's a pretty cool feature. 🙂 7mo
The_Real_Nani I haven‘t gone so far as to delete my GR account but I don‘t use it anymore. I prefer Litsy because it‘s less overwhelming and not so busy! 7mo
Bookladylinda I use both, Goodreads has its faults but I still like it. 7mo

Eggs | Jerry Spinelli
post image

Currently reading Eggs by Jerry Spinelli. I‘m taking a break from reading the Arrows Trilogy, and I might continue once again with that book once I‘m done reading this one. I got this free from a school library that was cleaning out their shelves. I love getting free books 🧡

mreads That's a very realistic looking cover, I was wondering why you were talking a picture of a carton of eggs 🤪 7mo
vumblereads 😂 @mreads people are running out of ideas for cover art, next thing you know, you‘re going to see your own underwear in the front cover without you knowing. And you‘ll say to yourself, “hey that‘s mine!” 7mo

Arrows of the Queen | Mercedes Lackey
post image
Pickpick

I just finished Arrows of the Queen, the first book of the Arrows Trilogy. This was Mercedes Lackey‘s debut novel and the first of many more books to come. The book has more world building in my opinion than storyline which was completely fine with me. Perhaps the author‘s intent was to set up the reader for the many books to come. Overall a great read! This has now become one of my favorite books of 2019. #80sfantasy #heraldsofvaldemar #talia

Rudis 😍😍😍 7mo
Deifio Let me know how you like the whole trilogy. I liked it, but I think you can really tell that it's an older fantasy trilogy. 😅 now
vumblereads @Deifio yes I‘m planning to finish the rest of the trilogy once I‘m done with #thedalemarkquartet 👌🏼 now

Arrows of the Queen | Mercedes Lackey

Now reading page 165.

I‘m trying to understand what Talia‘s real “gift” or powers are. I‘m underwhelmed by what she can do especially considering that she‘s the STAR of the book. 🤷🏻‍♀️

#heralds #valdemar #collegium

Leniverse It's the classical YA heroine thing, even though this was written before YA was a genre (and the series contains some adult scenes that might need trigger warnings). She's been underestimated by everyone including herself all her short life, and her Gift is a rare one, so even the Heralds don't know what to make of her at first. She'll come into her own. But it's a trilogy, so you need to be patient with the journey. 🙂 7mo
vumblereads @leniverse I just finished Arrows of the Queen, and I‘m starting to see how important her gift is. Thanks for explaining everything to me 😊 7mo

Has anyone read this book? I haven‘t finished reading it yet but the book has a remarkable semblance to Harry Potter. What‘s more interesting is that it was written BEFORE the Harry Potter books. Which makes me think, did JK Rowling get her ideas from older YA fantasy? #jkrowling #harrypotter #yafantasy #arrows #heralds #talia #mercedeslackey #trilogy #highfantasy

OneCent76 I haven't read it yet but now you have me curious! 7mo
vumblereads @OneCent76 yes please do! Would like to hear your thoughts on it 7mo
Leniverse There other, older, fantasy books with a similar setting to the Harry Potter books too. A Wizard of Earthsea, for one. And the character of Harry Potter himself is clearly based on Timothy Hunter from the Neil Gaiman graphic novel 7mo

vumblereads @Leniverse interesting! I‘m going to look up those books now and do a little research 🤓 7mo
esurient @Leniverse I remember reading about Gaiman disagreeing with that theory. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_influences_and_analogueshickleberrypu... 7mo
