Wow! Shirley Jackson is a MASTER at the art of short story. A few of these I was all “what?!” and had to go back and re-read! These were mostly arranged in chronological order (her widower edited this), so the later stories tend to be stronger.

This concludes with a few of her essays/lectures— also enjoyable. A funny one was her telling of the (strong) reaction to “The Lottery”. Also liked the one advising how to write stories. #authoramonth 👇

AlaMich When I was an adult ESL teacher I had a class of international advanced students read The Lottery, thinking it would be great for discussion. Turned out they were mostly just horrified by the story and not sure if I was in my right mind for assigning it. 6y

AlaMich @Soubhiville yeah! I think the story is such a part of our culture that it didn‘t occur to me that it could be quite disturbing—in a very NOT fun way—to someone who had no knowledge of it all. 6y

ValerieAndBooks @AlaMich I can imagine! In Jackson ‘s discussion of The Lottery, she states that readers were equally horrified when it was first published (1948) in The New Yorker— the likes of it had not appeared in mainstream media before! @Soubhiville 6y

Have been reading this, this morning. Surprised that only one story (The Lottery) overlaps with the other short story collection I had already read.

I wish Shirley Jackson had lived long enough to finish “Come Along With Me” — it‘s both funny and creepy!

It‘s August now (already 😱?!) and time for a new #authoramonth ....determined by challenge host @Soubhiville .... Shirley Jackson! As you can see, I have a few of her titles. The two in front are unread, but that‘s changing this month!

Tagged book (left front of pic) is a collection of essays, short stories (some I‘ve probably already read), and the unfinished novel she was working on just before she died.

ImperfectCJ I love Shirley Jackson! Don't forget her domestic, Erma-Bombeck-esque Raising Demons and Life Among the Savages. They were very surprising to me, and completely hilarious! 6y

This book was delivered to me with half of the pages coming out, but I was too lazy to send it back. I glued the pages back in last night and saw that there was an ad that had once been attached in the middle of the book. I've never seen that before! Didn't glue it back in, but it will be my bookmark for this book.
