In this new series, set in the bestselling world of Valdemar, Heralds Mags and Amily must continue to protect the realm of Valdemar while raising their children and preparing them to follow in their footsteps. Mags, Herald Spy of Valdemar, and his wife, Amily, the King's Own Herald, are happily married with three kids. The oldest, Peregrine, has the Gift of Animal Mindspeech--he can talk to animals and persuade them to act as he wishes. Perry's dream is to follow in his father's footsteps as a Herald Spy, but he has yet to be Chosen by a Companion. Mags is more than happy to teach Perry all he knows. He regularly trains his children, including Perry, with tests and exercises, preparing them for the complicated and dangerous lives they will likely lead. Perry has already held positions in the Royal Palace as a runner and in the kitchen, useful places where he can learn to listen and collect information. But there is growing rural unrest in a community on the border of Valdemar. A report filled with tales of strange disappearances and missing peddlers is sent to Haven by a Herald from the Pelagirs. To let Perry experience life away from home and out in the world, Mags proposes that his son accompany him on an expedition to discover what is really going on. During their travels, Perry's Animal Mindspeech allows him to communicate with the local wildlife of the Pelagirs, whose connection to the land aids in their investigation. But the details he gleans from the creatures only deepen the mystery. As Perry, Mags, and their animal companions draw closer to the heart of the danger, they must discover the truth behind the disappearances at the border--before those disappearances turn deadly.

Another brilliant book in the “Mags” series. Father and son facing danger together and meeting new friends that where once myth to them. There is more than one way to find a bond mate! Mags sin, Perry, has his animal mind speech put to the test in this well written story.

I‘m reading, I‘m enjoying but feeling a little confused; where is Justyn? And have yet to come across any strife with hawkbrothers... Was there a publishing mixup?

I have hated most of the books in this series, but this one is really interesting. Still no where near as good as her earlier valdemar books, but the protagonist is interesting and unique and the ending is really different and intriguing. A young spy follows in the steps of his father, finds a life long friend, and everyone learns something new. It reminded me of a Star Trek episode. 3/5 stars

InLibrisVeritas How are you liking the book? I just started it. 6y
GondorGirl @InLibrisVeritas I'm really enjoying it. The Mags books weren't my favorite, but I'm enjoying seeing him as a dad. And Perry is pretty much the Valdemar version of a Disney princess- making friends with animals wherever he goes! 😍 6y

InLibrisVeritas I haven't read the previous series. I had no idea it was part of a bigger universe until I got home with it 😅 But I like it so far, so I think I will probably start at the beginning at some point. 6y
GondorGirl @InLibrisVeritas I think you could easily read this one as a standalone. If you decide to read more in the series I'd recommend starting with either 'The Last Herald-Mage' trilogy (my personal favorite) or the 'Arrows of the Queen' trilogy. Those have all the major backstory you'd need to enjoy the entire series. 6y
InLibrisVeritas @GondorGirl Thank you for the recs! I will look out for both of those! 6y

Abi is jealous that her brother gets to go on a trip with their father... until she realizes the town is too small to have a library! 😂 I feel ya, Abi!
