I‘m a chronic re-reader and author stalker. Stalker in that once I like a book I‘ll hunt down and read every other title by said author voraciously

The other author from last night‘s reading. Will be looking for this book of short stories. Nilofar Shidmehr portrays the gamut of humour and strength within devastation. The two excerpts from this book of short stories that she read last night left me wanting more. Unfortunately she had no more books to sell with her last night.

Pickpick

I bought this book back in 1984in the scholastic order at my school when I was 12. My whole class ordered it. It was mandatory. I don‘t remember reading it as a class. I don‘t recall much discussion about the book. I read it then every time I read it I understand it more and it is just as horrific each time

Rereading this again while reading and watching The Man In The High Castle. Not sure if it‘s my age and cynicism showing plus the combination TMITHC but this reading I‘m looking at Julia as a tool of the Ministry, leading Winston to traitorous acts in order to re-educate and destroy him.

CoffeeNBooks Great book! 6y
PeanutButterPie @CoffeeNBooks it‘s been in my library once I was in 6th grade in 1984. Bought it through the scholastic book order as a mandatory purchase with my whole class. I‘ve kept the same copy and periodically reread it once or twice a decade 6y

I‘ve streamed the series and loved the characters, on screen they are rounded and the universe is real an cohesive. I picked up the book knowing it was going to be different but hoping that it would offer more perspective to what I‘d watched. Still got a quarter of the book to go and I‘ve noticed that two of my favourite characters are ones I don‘t like in the book.

Recommendations time! I‘m less than a month away from the first day of my fall term. I tend to visit the library and pick up random books with good illustrations to read to my students and create an art lesson from the books that I happen to pick up. I‘m wanting to try something different. Any one have a preschool children‘s book that has spectacular illustrations you‘d like to recommend for me to try?

LapReader Jane Tanner is an amazing artist and @LibrarianRyan does a great kid‘s book review. 6y
LibrarianRyan Thanks @LapReader Most of my reviews have comments about the illustrations. I love anything Catrow. So bright and colorful. A book that is just now coming out is 6y

As a teacher of small people I often receive end of term gifts. Tops is a gift card for art puppies tied with one for books. Now I‘m in the midst of deciding which Discworld I want to add to my permanent collection. I‘m leaning towards Carpe Jugulum but Snuff is a close second.

Pickpick

I started reading this book in snippets on the shelf at the bookstore over 20 years ago. I wanted desperately to see the movie but had no money to purchase the book. I read the first two chapters and then stopped. later when I had enough extra I bought it and devoured it in a single reading. I saw the movie two years later and was disappointed but The book is still a favourite. The word pictures brilliantly rendered.

My smallest feegle child is screen time free (read: decided to experiment with expletives in the chat box on her game and got busted) this week. These are her alternatives in between a whole lot of discussions about appropriate behaviour. AKA when and where we swear and why

Vertabrain Lol!! How old is your daughter? My two heathens are 14, and like to push their verbal boundaries too. 🤭😂 7y
PeanutButterPie @Vertabrain embarrassingly under 10 but over 5. When confronted she only managed to use the first letter of each word she‘d typed. She just wanted to test them out. 😐 7y
Vertabrain Haha! Nothing to be embarrassed about. It just shows she‘s not afraid to push boundaries, or test limits, which are ingredients in the recipe for growing a strong, courageous human. In the meantime, the parenting struggle is real. 😂Hang in there, Mama. You got this. 😉 (edited) 7y

CarolynM Details? 7y
PeanutButterPie @CarolynM so many details. Choreographed with precision, visually stunning, I got goosebumps during This Must Be The Place; Lazy and Burning Down The House. It was a feast for the ears and the eyes. Best show I have ever seen hands down including my favourite band. Final encore was powerful. A completely different performance from when we saw him in 2004/5 7y
CarolynM Wow! Thanks for that - sounds amazing. I saw him around 2000 in a fairly stripped back show which I thoroughly enjoyed. Would definitely go if he came here again. 7y

This is my 5th re-read and first with my daughter. I love this book so much and watching my daughters reactions to all my favourite parts was beyond satisfying. One of my favourite fantasy tropes is the girl running off to war dressed as a boy. Èowyn in LOTR was my first but Polly is my favourite.

I find this passage in Monstrous Regiment so hilarious. It‘s now a family in joke that has morphed from a thumbs up and a “I want to explode your donkeys” when we are pleased and/or proud of an act or accomplishment to a thumbs up exploding with sound effects. I started reading MR with my girls at bedtime a few months ago. Last night we finally got to to the jolly good donkey hating. Best way to end bedtime reading ever.

Gezemice Awesome! I love Terry Prarychett and I read most of Discworld but not this one yet. Next up! 7y
