Here are the first set of discussion questions.

I am really trying to get everything taken care of, but I ask for patience. My father in law passed away over the weekend, and I have been working longer hours at work.

#BBBBC #scififantasybookclub

cobwebmoth I'm sorry for your loss. *hugs* 2w

wanderinglynn I am so sorry for your loss. 2w
BookwormAHN I am so sorry for your loss, hugs 💔 2w
AmyG I am so very sorry. 😪 2w
phatsallylee I sorry for your loss. 2w
phatsallylee 1) audio 2) Prince Rurisk 3) i think it isolated him and stunted his ability to successfully interact with others. 2w
TheSpineView So so sorry for your loss.💔 2w
Crazeedi Sending you a litsyhug, and my deepest sympathies, stay strong❤❤❤ 2w
imyril Oh gosh, my best wishes to you and the family. 2w
Caroline2 I am so sorry. 💐 2w
Angeles Sorry for your loss. 2w
Angeles I enjoyed the book because it is such a page turner but going back over it i liked it less the second time around. I am not sure why. I read the book rather than doing the audio 2w
CoffeeK8 I‘m so sorry for your loss 2w
InLibrisVeritas @Angeles I can understand that, I rarely reread books for the fear of that exact thing happening. I'm glad you still enjoyed it despite that though. 2w
daena I am so sorry to hear of your loss, my condolences to you and your family. 2w
daena I absolutely loved the book and did both audio and physical copy. I plan on continuing to read the series. 2w
InLibrisVeritas @daena Thank you ❤ I'm so glad you loved it! It's definitely a series I want to continue as well! 2w
TheSpineView I loved this book too!💜 I have already read the 2nd one and will continue on. I liked some of the characters but I was not drawn to any of them. I think Fritz could have been so much more had been given the chance. Yet, in ways he was a better person for not growing up privileged. 2w
Gezemice I am so sorry for your loss. Sending you my deepest sympathies. 1w
Gezemice I have just finished it and loved it! @daena @TheSpineView I am going to read on, too! There is plenty to be left to explore, we only scratched the surface of The Skill, The Wit, and the mysterious repell thing that I am not sure if is a third thing or not. It was a page-turner and I loved the doublecrossings at the end. 1. I did text mostly but had audio as well when I was doing chores. (edited) 1w
Gezemice 2. The characters are well described but we don‘t really get too close to them, this is mostly plot driven. I wonder why Burrich has such a distaste for The Wit - there is something in his past. 3. I think his closeness to Burrich and animals is why his upbringing was in the stables and it might not have been an accident. 1w

Calling all sci-fi nominations for Nov/Dec's pick! Sorry this is horribly late. It seems most of you wanted to keep these last two months as our normal schedule.

1. No direct sequels.
2. Must be sci-fi.
3. Must be available in audio, print, and ebook
4. Only 1 nomination per person

Another round of questions for you guys!! #BBBBC #scififantasybookclub

Schnoebs I think that that is the scary thing about the ending of this book. It is so unbelievably realistic! I can easily picture people going to those lengths to try and secure their access to power. As for aliens, I don‘t believe in them. That doesn‘t mean my answer can‘t change but so far I have not seen any proof of them and my science background just can‘t buy it until there is evidence to support it lol 2mo
See All 19 Comments
InLibrisVeritas @Schnoebs I agree, I can totally see people striving well past the point of "good intentions" for something like this. And I always bounce back and forth from "there is no proof" and "statistically its possible", just depends on the day ? 2mo
tonyahoswalt I think there might be people who would try to make what they did to Vincent happen in reality, but I don't think that it would actually be done. I want to believe in aliens. I want there to be something out there. But if there was, I'm not sure they'd be friendly. 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @tonyahoswalt I thought for sure the helmet was going to “fix” Vincent, I wasn‘t expecting the doctor part at all. 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I thought that was the best part of the book, the storyline itself wasn‘t the best ever, but the insights into humans, and how we‘d react, counter, scramble amongst ourselves, rationalize....some of that was a little too spot on. 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I believe there is something else out there, whether it‘s anywhere we‘ll ever cross paths with it, or it‘s in a form we‘d recognize as life....that‘s a different story. But in an infinitely expanding universe, that tends to repeat what it does with the formation of planets, stars, solar systems, etc, it‘s impossible to believe we‘re the only planet where that accident of development occurred, especially considering it‘s occurred here repeatedly. 2mo
InLibrisVeritas @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I completely agree, the human aspect is the best part. Just exploring the extents in which we are willing to push ourselves for better or worse. 2mo
InLibrisVeritas @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I agree, the statistics of life coming to being is impressively low but when paired with the sheer size of the universe it's not low enough to be improbable. It would be cool to think there is a little pocket of the universe far away teeming with life. 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @InLibrisVeritas Yes. And whenever that question comes up they start talking about the number of planets with atmospheres like ours, with water, with oxygen, etc.....we never think about other forms of life, even as we find things in the bottom of our own oceans living off methane vents....life on other worlds doesn‘t have to look like what we assume it would.🤷‍♀️ 2mo
Bookgirl I think the pursuit of power was very realistic and that‘s what made the story great. As for aliens, of course! It‘s an infinite universe. Pretty egocentric to think we are the only planet with life. I‘m sure there are many worlds with life, probably very different from ours. Or maybe not! I don‘t rule out a parallel universe either. 2mo
InLibrisVeritas @Bookgirl I enjoy the idea of parallel universes too! 2mo
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I so agree! The methane vents, they show other type of life is possible, even on our own planet. We don‘t even know what‘s on the bottom of our own oceans. There are likely other life forms out there. Whether they will develop to a level that we can communicate with them, and they will be close enough and in the proper timeline where both civilizations exist - those are different issues. We might never meet aliens. 2mo
Gezemice @Schnoebs @Bookgirl @InLibrisVeritas The pursuit of power is definitely something that would happen, albeit I hope we would be smarter about it, i.e. don‘t put someone in charge with zero military and political training, poor judgment and psychopathic tendencies. I would hope there would be more oversight with many disciplines involved, and a large team, not only a few isolated people. 2mo
tonyahoswalt @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I thought the helmet would fix him too! But Kara says something about how it only fixed what it covered. 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @tonyahoswalt I thought that might be true too, until he broke his back...then I thought it might fix whatever it needed to make its pilot be able to pilot again, which might mean his back and legs once it started. 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice The only theory I didn‘t give much idea too was the it‘s all a simulation theory. The idea being that we‘d eventually be able to create VR/life-like simulations, where every conceivable outcome was tried, and in a world where limitless sims are running, the chance of ours being the 1 and not 1 of millions of simulations was almost impossible. Until Trump was elected and starting doing the same things President Trump did on the Simpsons🙄 2mo
BethM 4. Highly likely 6. No way are we the only intelligent life out there. 2mo

I am sincerely sorry for being so late with your discussion questions! I fell ill a few days ago and have spent much of that time in a fog. But without further delay, here is the first set!

As always please make spoilers. #BBBBC #scififantasybookclub

TheSpineView Yes, I liked it with some reservations. I read it about 2 years ago but didn't like it enough to reread. I also have not read the 2nd book either. I found it too far fetched for true science fiction and my tastes. Yet, you can't call it space opera either. 2mo
See All 24 Comments
TheSpineView I actually read this one. I didn't like the narrator and felt he/she had their own agenda. Maybe this was intentional to keep the reader at arms length. The use of a narrator made it hard for me to connect to the characters and I love stories where the character development is strong. 2mo
Schnoebs I started reading it but decided to go with the audiobook and follow along physically because for some reason I couldn‘t keep everyone straight in my head and the separate voices helped. I definitely enjoyed it but the ending fell flat for me. The interview guy was probably my favorite character and I‘d say he‘s somewhere in the grey area. As for the robot, I‘m not sure where it‘s going to lead but I liked seeing the countries fight over it. 2mo
InLibrisVeritas @TheSpineView I was definitely worried that the narration would keep readers at a distance. It seems to be one of those it either works for you or just doesnt at all kind if things. 2mo
InLibrisVeritas @Schnoebs I feel the audio adds a bit something that the text was missing for me. I do agree about the ending though, something about it just missed the mark. 2mo
Schnoebs @InLibrisVeritas I think it needed 1-3 more entries. Maybe a diary entry my the doctor or something like that. I just wanted a bit more context leading up to it 🤷‍♀️ 2mo
TheSpineView @InLibrisVeritas It wasn't a total waste of time. Maybe I should have listened instead of read. 2mo
Laughterhp I liked this book, I think because I listened to it on Audio. If I didn‘t, I definitely would have bailed. This book was a great set up on audio. I liked the mysterious narrator and I was definitely curious as to his motivations and who he actually worked for. I did have a little trouble picturing the sleeping giant and how it looked with them inside and the helmets they would put on. I enjoyed listening, but I don‘t think I‘ll continue the series 2mo
tonyahoswalt I read the print and liked the quick read of the style. I found it pretty interesting! I will definitely be reading the rest of the series. I thought the mysterious narrator might be a little "evil" but he wasn't heartless at least. The robot was pretty cool and I really want to learn more about the people who created it. Earth might be in trouble! 2mo
tonyahoswalt So far it seems like I'm the only one who really liked it. 😆 2mo
InLibrisVeritas @tonyahoswalt Not to worry, I really enjoyed it too! I see it's faults but I enjoyed it enough to read it twice ❤ 2mo
InLibrisVeritas @Laughterhp I can understand not continuing the series, but I am glad you enjoy this one! There is a robot on the cover of a Queen albulm, that's what I pictured most of the time 😂 2mo
Laughterhp @InLibrisVeritas OMG! hahaha I can now picture it perfectly in my head 😂 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Just finished it up tonight! I‘m a bit behind, it took me a bit to get into, but I liked it. I actually started reading, then went to audio, and about the time I got everyone sorted in my brain with their distinctive voices I was able to switch back to text and read the whole 2nd half this weekend. 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa # 2...he definitely grew on me as it continued and my opinion of him changed as it continued. 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa #3 honestly you would think it‘d be all about the giant/aliens, but really this book delved into just how weird humanity really is and all that came out in glaring clarity as people and nations found over a metal giant. 2mo
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Schnoebs @Laughterhp I started reading but switched to audio as well, mostly because I was too busy to stay in one place. I had the multiple narrators version, but was not too impressed - they were kind of wooden. The book was meh for me. Not bad, but not good, either. The setup was great, but I truly did not care for the sordid love affairs and the petty revenges. Many actions seemed downright stupid. ⬇️ 2mo
Gezemice (cont). such as allowing people alone into the control room, hiring the disaffected geneticist, having the base under the airport, etc. It was not realistic for something so important. The politics was dumb, too, always just firefighting. I did not like the mysterious narrator - he went from objectivity to softness, and did not do a good job of managing. So it was ok but I am not continuing. (edited) 2mo
Bookgirl I read this years ago and loved it. The story was so unique and I liked the style although it wore thin by book 3 for me - yep I liked it enough to read all 3. The narrator is my favorite character and I really enjoyed the whole series 2mo
InLibrisVeritas @Bookgirl I agree, book three was kind of old hat for me so it lost a bit of charm but I did enjoy the series as a whole. I enjoyed narrator as well, I think he and Mr. Burns are tied though 2mo
InLibrisVeritas @Gezemice I am sorry it didnt work for you. I want overly wild about the love interest angle either. 2mo
BethM I really enjoyed this book! Weird but good! Can‘t wait to read the others. I think the elephant is a machine of war. I can‘t wait to find out more about the narrator. 2mo

The next set of questions! Sorry for the delay, I had issues with the canva app again and since I was at work I couldn't fight with it.

Hopefully, the questions make sense 😂😅

#BBBBC #scififantasybookclub

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m going to start with 6...I loved that part, she built on the stories I knew, and fleshed them all out with more backstories, motivations, etc.... I quite liked how she wove in other myths into Circe‘s life story. And flipped the poor Odysseus story on its head. 4mo
Schnoebs I did appreciate the role power played in this and I think it did definitely bring out cruelty in many (ie her brothers are good examples) but I think there were other examples where it cause cruelty in people (Penelope). Honestly, I think the first men who came to her island had the most impact because she kept it secret for so long. And finally, I don‘t have a major Greek background so I‘m not sure on the reimagining but what I want to read them 4mo

See All 15 Comments
AmyG As for the gods...Circe was so much more. To me she seemed half god, half human. 5mo
TheSpineView I enjoyed this book immensely. I would love to read more from the author. The author did take some literary license for example the number of children Circe had. I especially loved how she humanized Circe. In this book she was drawn more to humans than what I remember. 5mo
TheSpineView The author had Circe grow beyond her godhood. I don't recall that from my study of mythology... but it has been a while since I was in school. Regardless I liked how she developed the character. 5mo
Caroline2 I loved the story and Circe but I found the author‘s writing style difficult at times. I don‘t know why, but my mind just kept wandering?? I didn‘t find it as immersive as I thought I would. 5mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa 1 I really enjoyed it, much more than I thought I would. 2. Definitely, she fleshed out a female character that was really just an obstacle for Odysseus, and made a well rounded and complex character. 3. Yes, I think she learned a lot which is why she chose something else by the end. 4mo
BethM I‘m with @Caroline2 , I didn‘t love this, and after trying a few times I DNFd. It wasn‘t immersive for me and I think the writing style didn‘t fit. 4mo
cherinium @BethM You're not alone. I found this to be quite a slog. I don't remember much about Circe from my studies of mythology, so I can't comment on Miller's take on her. The character just didn't grab me, and the writing style underwhelmed. This was absolutely #notmything #unpopularopinion 4mo
BethM @cherinium glad I‘m not alone! 4mo
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TheSpineView @amyG I have read Circe last year and it absolutely blew me away. I meant to re-read for this but did not get to it... I do recall however that I loved the writing, the lyrical yet hard-edged sentences, Circe coming into her own powers, and finally realizing that gods are assholes - and finding her humanity. Godding in Circe‘s world is being petty and squashing brutally - and you can‘t be happy like that. 4mo
Gezemice @AmyG @TheSpineView Circe is a minor character in the Odyssey - Miller inserts her into better known stories of mythology, as well as making her her own character. It gives her an opportunity to throw in most of the Odyssey, much of Troy, Scylla and Charybdis - but also weave a feminist story. Even goddesses were raped. 4mo
Schnoebs I enjoyed this and thought it was decent but I‘m happy that I‘m not alone in thinking it couldn‘t keep my attention. It took me twice as long as I normally would for a book this long. I did enjoy Circe as a character and the path she took where she tried to fix her past mistakes and not glorify them like heroes and gods would. I‘m not sure how much she learned from it but she did try to fix it which I liked. 4mo
InLibrisVeritas @Schnoebs I had issues with it holding my attention too, even though I loved Circe as a character. I am glad to have read it though. 4mo

This was one of my most coveted editions of Harry Potter, and thanks to and thanks to another collector I now own a copy. It's always been a book a bit too expensive for me to but, but she had it at the right price atthe right time.

This is the hard to find Scholastic School Market edition which was printed in 2008, with only one printed and only offered in US schools during book fairs I believe.
I am super excited to finally own it.

Sorry for the delay guys! Here are your second set of questions ! #BBBBC

I went to post yesterday and found out that canva didnt save the file like I thought it did. 😅 So had to come up with new questions because I couldn't remember the previous set.

cobwebmoth This is part of what bothered me. What makes him any better than the others? Nothing really. We just want him to win because we've been following him, but we can't even know for sure that he's the "right" one. I think it would be very tempting to look into other universes, but I wouldn't give up my current children for any alternative. 6mo
See All 11 Comments
Laughterhp I don‘t know if I‘d be willing to kill myself or another version on myself. They all were obsessed with getting back to one version of reality that I didn‘t really understand. I don‘t know if Jason1 deserved his family more than the other Jason‘s. He‘s definitely better than the other Jason who started the whole thing. I like my life, I don‘t know if I would want to explore other realities. 6mo
TheSpineView @cobwebmoth I agree with you. We just feel a connection to that Jason because we have become invested in his story. I actually would like to the an alternate universe that has no wars and everyone lives in harmony with nature and others. 6mo
BookwormAHN I think it would be too weird to have to take my life back from myself. I'm not sure what I would do. We definitely feel more of a connection with Jason 1 because we are invested in his story. He does seem better the the second one but we don't really get to meet or see what the others have been through. The weird thing is that in no reality does Amanda follow him back to his universe. Yes, I would definitely want to check out new realities. 6mo
cherinium I agree with the consensus that the reader is made to feel sympathetic to Jason 1 by presenting his path as "the real Jason." I was definitebothered by the idea of having to fight against alternate versions of oneself. I believe his wife was confronted with an impossible choice at the end. I don't think I'd have any interest in visiting alt realities. I 2nd guess my choices enough as it is. I wouldn't want the added layer of knowing what may have been 6mo
RJHowe That is the beautiful ambivalence if the novel. That all perspectives on justice are relative. Or are they? And the ones who are willing to murder for dominance not inferior in some way? 6mo
RJHowe Oh...and thanks for the great thought provoking questions! 6mo
HufflepuffGirl90 I really felt sympathetic to Jason1, but at the same time, who‘s to say he was the “right” one. Was there a right one, really, and what makes that Jason better than all the others? Such an interesting idea that we root for Jason1 just because he is the one with the steady perspective in the book. I think it would be interesting to visit other realities, but without the life choices that made those possible, I definitely wouldn‘t want to switch 6mo
swatreads I think yes....i understood and was empathetic to jason 1 because we know the story from his perspective only. If i find myself in a parallel universe living a life i like better then i would probably go live that life given that my parents are the same even there😊 6mo

The first set of questions are here #BBBBC! I am curious as to how you all enjoyed this one! It's an interesting mix of genres, packed into an almost light read.

#scififantasybookclub

Laughterhp 1. I enjoyed the book. There was a lot going on, my eyes glazed over a bit at some parts, but it also felt like a light read. I‘m glad I read it, but I don‘t know if I would read another book my Blake Crouch. 2. I would probably freak out just like Jason did. I would probably try and find someone else I knew in my old world to see what was going on. 3. Reading about the multiverse was interesting, they made it seem real in this book. 7mo
See All 17 Comments
InLibrisVeritas @Laughterhp I am in the same boat as you, I don't really feel the urge to grab more of his work even though I enjoyed it. 7mo
bookandcat I liked it, I don't know if I'll pick up his Pines series but I'd be up for other stand alones. I would completely freak out if it were me though, lol. Multiverse theory is a very legit physics theory so I enjoy the fun of seeing it play out here even if I don't think this is the actuality of how a real multiverse would function. It's like a pulpier more action packed take on physics compared to Donnie Darko's slower more think-heavy take. 7mo
BookwormAHN 1. This was a reread for me and I think I enjoyed it more the second time. I would probably read more by him. 2. O think I would plead amnesia until I figured out what was going on. 3. I found the idea of the multiverse fascinating but it was a little too much by the end of the book with that many versions of him running around. 7mo
TheSpineView 1. I enjoyed it even though it was a reread for me. I would like to read more by Crouch. 2. I am sure I would freak some if I was in the same situation. Even though I normally keep a cool head. 3. I liked the use of the multiverse in the plot. It made it seem plausible. I am not really a believer in that particular theory. 7mo
cherinium I loved reading this book. I found the multiverse theory to be a great vehicle for the plot. My brain starts to cramp when I begin to think of multiverse being a real thing. It feels more comforting to believe that there is only one reality. I think I would be horribly depressed at the prospect at losing my entire life if I woke in a similar situation. I would read more by Crouch, but I probably won't seek it out. 7mo
cobwebmoth It was just okay for me. I liked Pines a lot better. I think I've just read too many books and comics that deal with multi-verse theory. I'd like to think I would react better to the situation he faced, but I'd probably just have a panic attack. 7mo
swatreads I loved the book. I find multiverse theme very exciting. And if i were to wake up like that i would be scared to death! I'd love to read more books by Blake Crouch. Pines is in my Tbr. I don't believe in multiverse obviously but i think the idea of a parallel universe is very interesting and imagining yourself in another world living a different life is so thrilling! 6mo
BethM I liked it and I‘d try other books by him of similar nature. The multiverse fascinates me. I found the first half of the book slow and then it picked right up! 6mo
RJHowe Loved the book and am sure to read more. I am a strong believer in the multiverse theory since it was proposed by author Michael Moorcock. Current physics seems to suggest he was right. 6mo
RJHowe How would I react? Hard to say. I have read some much alt earth fiction and current physics at least I would have a grounding. 6mo
Eyelit I enjoyed this book from start to finish - what a ride! I‘ll definitely check out more of Crouch‘s work (didn‘t he do that Pines series?) I don‘t know that I‘d be quite as functional as Jason in the beginning but I definitely had a lot of the same troubleshooting thoughts as him throughout so I‘d like to think I‘d do ok eventually. 😁 the multiverse theory is fascinates me and I‘m all for it 6mo
InLibrisVeritas @Eyelit I believe he did do the Pinee series! I'd probably be extremely angry right away, and probably end up worse off than he did when he tried running 😂 6mo
InLibrisVeritas @RJHowe I think the multiverse theory is incredibly cool, but the small primative part of me is freaked out by it 😂 But I think I'd have some grounding initially too, I'd just be upset that some other version of me thought that this switch would be okay 6mo
HufflepuffGirl90 Late to the party (sorry guys). But I loved the book, was totally hooked from the beginning. I definitely don‘t think I would have done as well as Jason did in the beginning. I‘d like to think I would, but let‘s be honest, I would be freaking out. I love the idea of multiverses. 😊 6mo

Books from yesterdays thrift haul! I was excited about all of them, until I got them home and read reviews ?
The top 3 are apparently either very politically biased "history" or not informative, so those are a bust.

Merrick by Anne Rice
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George R.R. Martin
A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin
My Life by Bill Clinton
Decision Points by George W. Bush
(I am trying to read books by/about each president)

Every single villain that is a women is or ends up naked ?

It's just stupid. Like I get weird animalistic creatures like water hags being naked, but why would someone wear just a skirt? Its not cultural because they wore clothes before being evil. It's like the soap opera rule where if the guy's collar is unbuttoned he's "bad".

imyril Ugh, that sort of thing really annoys me. 8mo
