#90sinJuly #insaneinthebrain I had a few different books in mind for this prompt. Two classics, two newer books & what they have in common are female characters who may be going mad & at least some isolation in creepy rooms/houses that seems to spur the madness along. The Yellow Room & The Evening Spider both feature 'rest cures'-isolation & bed rest-often used on women thought to have hysteria or postpartum issues, popular in the late 1800s-1920s

DebinHawaii Often the 'cure' was misused as a way to control women & left them worse physically & mentally. 😱 8y
Cinfhen Great choices as always ?and it is terrible how "nervous" women were treated back in the day. Scary!!! 8y
OutsmartYourShelf This is a good non fiction read about this very subject. I read it last year. 8y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen Indeed it was!😱 @Deangirl Thanks for the non-fiction recommendation--stacking it now! 👍📚 8y

Pickpick

Fast moving suspense/mystery with a story within a story. I am not sure the present day story was as well connected to the story set in the past but I enjoyed the book anyway. A good way to pass a rainy day.
