The Light in the Dark
The Light in the Dark: A Winter Journal | Horatio Clare
4 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
As November stubs out the glow of autumn and the days tighten into shorter hours, winter's occupation begins. Preparing for winter has its own rhythms, as old as our exchanges with the land. Of all the seasons, it draws us together. But winter can be tough. It is a time of introspection, of looking inwards. Seasonal sadness; winter blues; depression - such feelings are widespread in the darker months. But by looking outwards, by being in and observing nature, we can appreciate its rhythms. Mountains make sense in any weather. The voices of a wood always speak consolation. A brush of frost; subtle colours; days as bright as a magpie's cackle. We can learn to see and celebrate winter in all its shadows and lights. In this moving and lyrical evocation of a British winter and the feelings it inspires, Horatio Clare raises a torch against the darkness, illuminating the blackest corners of the season, and delving into memory and myth to explore the powerful hold that winter has on us. By learning to see, we can find the magic, the light that burns bright at the heart of winter: spring will come again.

#Naturalitsy

Clare describes dealing with depression and SADS in British winters. The nature writing is eloquent and so perceptive. It's not too much of a stretch to find yourself gulping in gasps of cold air as you stamp your feet on the hoary grasses. The author does hold your hand and a torch, as it were, to shine light on the darkest of winter days.

Completely forgot to review this before heading to Jaipur! Loved it. Its twin narratives of the glories winter, and the author has an amazingly lyric turn of phrase, and the crushing slow progression of the author‘s depression/ SAD which shouldn‘t be able to form an amazing book but does. Highly, highly recommended especially if you‘re a fan of winter.

Also my first #Booked2019 book, for #newtomeAuthor and #Winter

Cinfhen Fantastic review! 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen last thing I did before the food poisoning claimed me! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂 6y
Cinfhen Oh no!!! Really!??!!! After all this time living there??? 😲😫 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen tell me about it!!!! Four days later, I am barely upright and even that‘s touch and go!!! 😭😭😭😭😭 The sheer ignominiousness of it all!!! Managed two pieces of toast today - first solid food since Tuesday 😭😭😭 6y

An uncle today started a fight with his son & daughter in law because he didn‘t know anyone (other than her in previous relationships) who had been a victim of domestic violence (so it “wasn‘t as bad as they‘re [statistics] making out”). Tonight, I read this and was struck again at why it‘s so important that we talk to people about the sticky, real portions of life, why we need to have the difficult discussions. ♥️ It‘s how we hold each other up.

CarolynM Shakes head. I don't know anyone who's been murdered. Doesn't mean the statistics are wrong...😣 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM I know right?!? 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y

Okay - #Booked2019 that I‘m going to attempt to complete without actually buying any new books for the sheer fun of figuring out what on earth is actually on my shelves (also 2019 = moving countries! 😱Winter & spring at least will need to be prepacked!).

This is Winter, Planned! Girl Waits With Gun might be a stretch for Female Detective but 🤞🏻. For Irish Author I‘ve got 2 Seamus Heaney‘s I spent last night hunting through the apartment. ⬇️

GlassAsDiamonds New To Me author is the currently magnificent Horacio Clare, Happy Place: Diary of a Bookseller, Podcast: Better than Before & Fantasy Retelling: Uprooted. 😊 Feeling very chuffed but already concerned about Spring‘s Cli-Fi which could be a challenge!!! 😊👍🏻😊Should be great fun (if I can ever get the google form to work. @Cinfhen & @4thhouseontheleft - I‘ve signed up 3 times so far but still no confirmation email🤔?) 6y
Cinfhen Don‘t worry about the confirmation xx we‘ve got you entered. I can send you my #CliFi read after I‘m done. I plan on reading 6y
alisiakae Don‘t worry about the form! Great pile! I am using books off my stacks at home for the winter prompts as well, except one. 6y

GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen 🥳🥳🥳 Many thanks for both the entry and the loan which I will definitely take you up on! After gifts from home, LitFest & a bunch of random cleaners/ handymen/ leaking walls and the both of us randomly moving piles of books onto shelves because of all the above, we‘ve finally given up and admitted we‘ve got only the loosest sense of what‘s actually in here but CLI-Fi is a genre neither of us reads!! 😊😊😊. 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @4thhouseontheleft many thanks!!! 😊😊😊 Quite excited for this I must say! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Yay! Isn‘t the planning fun? And so good that you‘re reading books you already own. I think Girl Waits with Gun is a perfect pick for that prompt! 6y
