Gold Fame Citrus: A Novel | Claire Vaye Watkins
The much-anticipated first novel from a Story Prize-winning 5 Under 35 fiction writer.Named a Hot Fall Read by Vogue, Mashable, Vanity Fair, Pop Sugar, Kirkus, Hello Giggles, and Los Angeles MagazineNamed a Best Book of the Year by The Washington Post, PloughsharesandKirkus Reviews In 2012, Claire Vaye Watkinss story collection, Battleborn, swept nearly every award for short fiction. Now this young writer, widely heralded as a once-in-a-generation talent, returns with a first novel that harnesses the sweeping vision and deep heart that made her debut so arresting to a love story set in a devastatingly imagined near future: Unrelenting drought has transfigured Southern California into a surreal, phantasmagoric landscape. With the Central Valley barren, underground aquifer drained, and Sierra snowpack entirely depleted, most Mojavs, prevented by both armed vigilantes and an indifferent bureaucracy from freely crossing borders to lusher regions, have allowed themselves to be evacuated to internment camps. In Los Angeles Laurel Canyon, two young MojavsLuz, once a poster child for the Bureau of Conservation and its enemies, and Ray, a veteran of the forever war turned surfersquat in a starlets abandoned mansion. Holdouts, they subsist on rationed cola and whatever they can loot, scavenge, and improvise. The couples fragile love somehow blooms in this arid place, and for the moment, it seems enough. But when they cross paths with a mysterious child, the thirst for a better future begins. They head east, a route strewn with danger: sinkholes and patrolling authorities, bandits and the brutal, omnipresent sun. Ghosting after them are rumors of a visionary dowsera diviner for waterand his followers, who whispers say have formed a colony at the edge of a mysterious sea of dunes. Immensely moving, profoundly disquieting, and mind-blowingly original, Watkinss novel explores the myths we believe about others and tell about ourselves, the double-edged power of our most cherished relationships, and the shape of hope in a precarious future that may be our own. From the Hardcover edition.

I'd put this one down for a while, because, well, I got distracted by new shiny books, but took it up again today. We were stationed at Ft. Irwin, CA for a couple of years, and spent a lot of time sightseeing and travelling around the area. Spent a lot of time in Barstow and Victorville, as those are the closest towns to post (30-ish miles across the desert.) The descriptions of the Amargosa salt dunes ambushing towns is brutal.

Dystopian fiction - Ray and Luz must flee California to find somewhere with water. this book was interesting and strange, it did not all come together for me. there were interludes that did not make sense and jumps in time that felt unnecessary. Still it kept my attention and I think will make for a good discussion. With the amazon burning and our current govt some of what was depicted seemed not too far fetched.

Books and dog butts.
The heat wave seems an appropriate time to read about a SoCal drought. It‘s taking me back to the days when we were stationed in the Mojave: “ But it‘s a DRY heat!” 😄 🔥 🔥 🔥

This book has so many great elements—massive drought causing a climate-based catastrophe, small groups of “survivors” forming, a cult-like leader in the desert. But it never quite came together for me. It didn‘t help that the audiobook reader drove me crazy, though I‘m not sure I would have loved the print book, either.

BarbaraBB I‘ve read so many mixed reviews about this book but I DO need one for Utah 😉 6mo
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I was actually planning to read Krakauer‘s book for Utah, but then this one suddenly went there. I‘m afraid I just can‘t recommend it. Maybe 6mo
BarbaraBB That is a great recommendation! I visit Salt Lake City later this year so it will be so interesting to read this before I‘ll be there! #stacked 6mo

jessinikkip Dont you hate an audiobook with a bad narrator? I know I would 6mo
squirrelbrain That Krakauer sounds great - stacked! Now to see if I can find a library or cheap (ish) copy in the UK... 6mo
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Awesome! I hope it works out for you both. 6mo
Hooked_on_books @jessinikkip It‘s awful! The narrator can really make or break the book entirely. 6mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I just bought it for 5,69 euros at BookDepository 😉 6mo
JaclynW @Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Under the Banner of Heaven is an excellent book choice for Utah! Krakauer does an excellent job with his research and his story telling keeps you turning the pages. Plus the subject matter is totally Utah (the parts that many people here like to hide). @BarbaraBB Enjoy your visit to SLC! Utah is a beautiful place! If you need recommendations, let me know.🙂 6mo
squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB - I win, just! Mine was Qc (used)! Fancy a buddy read? Thanks for the recommendation @Hooked_on_books and @JaclynW ?? 6mo
Hooked_on_books @JaclynW I‘ve read several of his books and think he‘s a great writer. He imparts information while keeping things not just interesting but fascinating. I actually haven‘t even read this one yet, but it‘s been sitting on my shelves, patiently waiting. 😂 6mo
Librarybelle I think I have this one slated for the #booked2019 challenge. Good review! 6mo
JaclynW @Hooked_on_books You explained Krakauer's writing perfectly! 6mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I‘d like a buddy read, but I don‘t know if you have time for it the first half of July? I‘d like to finish it before I‘ll be in Utah around July 20... if that‘s an option for you, I‘m in! 6mo
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Thank you! We‘ll be travelling from Idaho or Wyoming (not sure yet) into Utah and then have two days in SLC before taking the train to the east. We‘ll be (coincidentally!) in SLC on Pioneers Day! If you have any recommendations for the north of Utah or SLC, I‘d love to hear them! Thanks again 💜 6mo
squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB - I can read it anytime, just let me know when... I‘m away the second week of July so I‘ll just have to put it in the #bookpile to take it with me! 6mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Great! Let‘s do this. Second week of July it is then! 🙌 6mo
squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB - great! I shall squirrel it onto the ‘definitely taking‘ pile when it arrives..! 6mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB I may just join you two in this endeavor! I still want to read it, even though I already have my Utah book. 😉 6mo
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Yay, that would be great! Is 2nd week of July possible for you too? 6mo
squirrelbrain Yay @Hooked_on_books - that‘ll be fab! 6mo
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB Yeah, I think that‘ll work. 6mo
Cinfhen I read this book and thought the beginning was brilliant but it COMPLETELY fell apart for me towards the end. Her writing was good but her storytelling was off kilter. It just got SO WEIRD 6mo

I just started this one on audio and I‘m not sure I can continue. The reader is saying “Luhz” instead of “Looz” for the main character, Luz. It‘s driving me crazy! There was even a line about how someone was mispronouncing it this way! 😤

Eyelit that's super frustrating. you'd think they'd get the pronunciation right on names! 6mo
readordierachel That would drive me bananas! 6mo
Hooked_on_books @Eyelit I had always thought so. Then I listened to a book that mentioned the Schullykill River in Philly and the reader absolutely butchered the name. It‘s disappointing when they don‘t make an effort to get it right. 6mo
LiterRohde That was a purposeful thing, not a mistake of the narrator. It shows how she just gave in and started pronouncing it the way others said it should be pronounced. Goes along with her passive agency in much of the rest of the book. 5mo

I liked this book, but it got a bit slippery in the middle towards the end. It was just too hard to figure out what was happening or why. But I like the concept a lot and I might revisit it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am finally forced to put down some thoughts on this book, because of a monthly prompt. It starts in California and has a few odd sex scenes - Californication. Too perfect to pass up....👇

#WanderingJune | 7: #Californication

📷: Google Books

LiterRohde I say I am forced, because I think I like this book. But why? I‘ve had months to think and I‘m still not sure. The book mostly made me mad. At one point, I wanted to throw it across the room (I was listening to the audiobook, so cooler heads prevailed when the thoughts of buying a new iPhone entered the picture)....👇 6mo
LiterRohde The characters were not all that likable, the story was bleak and, at times, disturbing. Yet, the setting - a near future California devastated by drought - was fully engrossing and compelling, and the prose was beautiful. I still remember when the title was woven into the story. Brilliant....👇 6mo
LiterRohde So something about this book, with its flawed characters and captivating setting, rang true for me. I think , in the end, it was that people will be people - good, bad, indifferent - no matter what is going on in the world. It‘s difficult to change. It‘s hard to figure out who you are. It feels impossible to outrun your past. All the forces of control that exist now - parents, jobs, roles, religion, to name a few - will still exist then. 6mo

LiterRohde @TracyReadsBooks Thanks. I try my best. 6mo
Megabooks Great review, even though I felt very different about the book! 😉👏🏻 6mo
LiterRohde @Megabooks I commented in that very thread of which you speak. You and @Cinfhen did not have a good time with this book! I knew I liked it at that time (4 months ago) but I couldn‘t put it in words. It‘s taken this long for me to think about and digest. And I still would not have written about it had it not been for the prompt. (edited) 6mo
Megabooks @LiterRohde Sometimes it‘s hard to articulate why you have feelings about a book. Station Eleven is my all-time favorite book, and I can articulate superficial reasons for it, the non-linear timeline, Shakespeare, Star Trek, but there‘s something more about it that I can‘t access in a post or review. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6mo
LiterRohde @Megabooks Loved Station Eleven. 6mo
BarbaraBB This sounds so interesting. Thank you for writing about it, I‘m happy the prompt made you and will check out this book. Great review. 6mo
Cinfhen I might still own this book @BarbaraBB or I may have gifted it to @TrishB I can‘t remember 🤦‍♀️anyway, I thought it started out really strong and I agree the writing was brilliant but somewhere along the way the book totally nosedived for me. Such an articulate review @LiterRohde I wish I walked away with the same feelings but I felt like the author lost her focus. Like @Megabooks I thought Station 11 was PERFECT 🤷‍♀️ 6mo
TrishB @Cinfhen no- you told me to stay away from this one! 6mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
To be honest, all the negative reviews I saw for this book had me intrigued. 😂 I wasn‘t really sure what to expect going in in terms of liking or disliking this, but I was pleasantly surprised when the writing grabbed me right off the bat. That ended up being one of my favorite aspects of the book, although some descriptions were a little too crude for my taste. This story is very bleak, the characters flawed and ⬇️

shadowspeak17 not very likeable, but I always wanted to keep reading, and in the end, I can say I did enjoy this book.

Completed my #CliFi #Booked2019 pick. Overall I gave it a so-so.
Was expecting more cli-fi and less cult-fi (?). I enjoyed the damaged world Watkins created, but I could have done without some of the odd erotic scenes. To me they were more off-putting than adding to the story.
I found some of the writing style grating also, like the or, or, or/she would, she would, she would sections.
@Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage

Cinfhen I agree, this book was very erratic ~ I found certain elements (like the opening chapters about the devastated landscape and squatting in Beverly Hills mansions) really well done but the second half of the book was just bizarro. I think she‘s a talented writer but maybe I‘m just not sophisticated enough to appreciate all of her ideas. 9mo
Cinfhen That scene with his haram was really uncomfortable 9mo
Canndor @Cinfhen I agree. I can appreciate her writing talent, but I wish the book had been more focused on the devastated landscape, I really enjoyed those parts but there was too little of that and too much of the weird stuff. And yes to your spoiler post. Lol that scene was a little too much. 9mo

Cinfhen I missed this!!! I‘m thinking I should change my rating to a Pan too!!! I still believe the author possesses talent but this book was effed up!!! 10mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m all...maybe I would read your next book if it got good reviews here...then again, maybe not!! 🤪🤪 10mo
Cinfhen Ugh! It was just so out there...and WTF was up with Ig?? And his sex harem??? 10mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen It was just far too weird. The whole Baby Dunn stuff and Levi and his crew chasing Ray around the desert. And the harem was weird too. And Ig nearly dying. Did you read the acknowledgments? Even those were weird. I love reading the acknowledgements for some reason. 😝 10mo
Cinfhen No...I was so glad to be done that I didn‘t read them. But I did see a review where somebody mentioned that the author‘s dad was part of the Manson cult in the late 60s and he believed in free love. 10mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen That is crazy!! I guess the cult in this book is a little Mansonesque. I did like the illustrations in the print book. That‘s the only unqualified positive I‘ll give this book! 10mo
Cinfhen Me too but I failed to understand the whole point of the illustrations - I may have done some skimming there 10mo
Cinfhen The first part was pretty good but once they hit the road the book took an awful turn 10mo
LiterRohde It was an awful book. I wanted to throw the book across the room. But I listened on audio, so I couldn‘t even do that. BUT I think that was the point. The whole search for truth, the twist fanaticism and celebrity give to truth, rang true to me - especially religious fundamentalism. And it made me angry. And yet I came out the other side, not liking - that‘s the wrong word - maybe appreciating that it tackled those themes? I‘m not sure....👇 10mo
LiterRohde I‘ve still got to think about it more. And eventually I‘ll flesh it more out in a review. Anyway, as @Cinfhen can attest, I like odd books and overthink them, so maybe I‘m just crazy. 🤪 10mo
Cinfhen I still believe there was a really good story in these pages @LiterRohde I‘m just pissed I wasn‘t clever enough to appreciate or find it!!!! 10mo
Megabooks @LiterRohde @Cinfhen I remember when it came out it was hailed as the next great dystopian novel. Either there was too much symbolism, which I HATE, or it just wasn‘t organized enough to make the conclusions or ask the questions that she tried to. I wouldn‘t be opposed to trying her next book. Does she have another one out? 10mo
Cinfhen I think she only has this novel and her first book which was a short story collection 10mo

I believe there was a meaningful story somewhere in these pages but so much superficial BS too. Water is scarce & draught has ravaged California and most of the Southwest, when young lovers find an infant they believe may be their savior of sorts. They begin a dangerous quest to leave the barren wasteland & seek refuge in the Midwest. But when they come across a commune real troubles begin. #Booked2019 #CliFi

It‘s an absolutely gorgeous day outside and I‘ve managed to read another 80 pages of this book BUT it‘s not easy going. Claire Watkins has written some fabulous prose but her ideas are all over the place and her structure is random & inconsistent. The world she has created is BLEAK & grim. California is a wasteland, draught has ravaged the state leaving only nomads, scavengers & some unsavory characters.

In an excellent article about creative writing, Helen Betya Rubinstein writes that Claire Watkins published “two acclaimed books before looking down at her own work and realizing that all along, she‘d been pandering to old white men.” A worthwhile article for anyone who loves to read.

suzisteffen This is REALLY great. As a writing instructor, though only rarely fiction or poetry, I will be thinking about & incorporating this in the future. Thank you! 11mo
Lindy @suzisteffen You‘re welcome. I found it thought provoking, even though in my experience as a reader‘s advisor I was already of the mindset that there‘s no such thing as a good book. (It‘s what the reader does with it that makes it good.) 11mo

Achingly beautiful prose spills out of this novel, which centres on a small family that‘s desperately trying to cross the vast and growing desert that spans North America.

Strange, lyrical, raw. This book is riveting; an amazingly beautiful what if that feels scarily prophetic. I highly recommend! If you want a dystopian page turner with meat on the bones, this is the book for you!

Having lived my whole life in CA where we're always expecting severe drought or living thru one (like just recently) this worked more for me than it might for others. (Tho it was pouring all day yesterday, LOL) The world is not that unbelievable, & the ways ppl react - the lives they scrabble together, the cult-like society - are within expectation. The end got a bit loopy & pretentious, & I wished it were less odd and more grounded overall. 3/5⭐️

Today is the last day of my staycation. I don't want to go back to work tomorrow. Like, really really do not want to. Ever. So I'm spending all day reading and trying to pretend like tomorrow will never arrive. (And hoping this book will be a better distraction than the crummy last one.) 😣 #nowreading

GarthRanzz If this one is better than your last then I never want to read your last book. I don‘t normally hate on books but this is one of two that I make an exception for. 2y
alisonrose @GarthRanzz Things about this book worked better for me than the previous one. Everyone has different tastes and opinions. I make it clear that I didn't love this, but I doubt you know anyone who shares 100% of your opinions on books or anything else for that matter 2y

Being a California native (and always concerned about water), I picked this book up without knowing anything about it. Totally worth it. I enjoy books that take me to a new world with people different from me. I didn't like the main character, but this talented writer made me want to explore this character and those around her. Loved it.

I haven‘t ever had a believer‘s disposition. But lately I‘ve been getting comfortable with the idea of something bigger than myself–I don‘t want to say ‘God.‘ When I was growing up people around me used that word in all the wrong ways. It was a weapon, that word.

I found the first third of this book engaging and imaginative and really wanted to enjoy the rest, but once Luz turns up in the “colony” the whole scheme becomes overly familiar/predictable (Is the charismatic-cult-leader-with-harem-of-young-women thing not played out yet? Can it be, please?) and the story loses all forward momentum. Add to that the fact that Luz is unbearably (unsym)pathetic and what‘s left is sadly unsatisfying. ⭐️⭐️1/2

emilyhaldi Totally agree! I really wanted to like this one but about a third of the way in it lost me. I bailed 😏 2y

I really loved the first half of this book, but the second half fell a little flat. I should have expected some of the weird cult stuff given Watkins‘s background, and her collection of short stories (which I loved), but it didn‘t really work for me. And wow is that sex scene bizarre. 😳 Thanks to Sullivan for helping with the picture. #catsoflitsy

Too much #sunshine is a problem if you live in post-apocalyptic California where the land is parched and the people are thirsty... This book was not my taste, but if apocalyptic fiction is your thing, give it a whirl! ☀️☀️☀️

Pickpick

I had to think for a long time about whether to give this one a “pick” or a “so-so.” It is bleak as hell. No levity whatsoever. No humor. Nothing like the absurdity in Vonnegut or the philosophical WTF present in Philip K Dick, both writers from whom I could see influences here. But the writing is so evocative, so compelling, so unusually structured... I have decided I will read more Watkins. So that must mean I liked it. Right?
