Lord Jim
Lord Jim | Joseph Conrad
Originally published in Blackwood's Magazine in serial form, Lord Jim is a unique portrait of Jim and the man who attempts to recount his life, Marlow. Jim is a dreamer who goes to sea, hoping one day to become a hero. His chance finally comes aboard a seriously leaking ship filled with Muslim pilgrims travelling to Mecca. At the official inquiry into the events that transpired aboard the Patna, Jim meets Marlow. Economic and racial versions of colonialism come into play continually through Lord Jim, which is the first of Conrad's major novels.

Some potential September reads. I think we're looking to do a serious/sad book for September

Ruthiella Native Son is very sad and very serious. I recommend it! It‘s also a pretty fast read in my experience. (edited) 2y

#LitsyClassics L
So far the toughest of my challenge. The story of a yng merchant seaman who escapes from a sinking ship leaving many muslim passengers in to their fate. At the inquiry he is befriended by Marlow who follows his life with interest as it builds to an end with similarities to Heart of Darkness. Dense prose + at times felt never ending but several days after putting it down im glad to have read it and curious abt conrad and his life.

I am resorting to whisky now to try and get through this very dense book which is letter L in my #LitsyClassics - it's the first in my challenge that i am struggling with but as i never ever bail on a book i will finish but lordy lordy i deserve something light next.

Aimeesue I loathe Conrad's books. Mad props to the man for learning to write so well in a language not native to him, but holy cow, they aren't enjoyable at all to me. (edited) 6y
Cathythoughts Fair play to you for not bailing... I‘m a very ok bailer. I‘d definitely have a double shot of that whiskey though .. sounds like a stiff drink is needed 6y

Starting this next on @SerialReader I really hope I enjoy it more than I did Heart of Darkness.

AshleyHoss820 I wasn‘t too keen on Heart of Darkness either! However, I liked The Secret Agent. His writing style was different than I was expecting. Good luck! This one is on my TBR too! 😊 6y

It's a classic, I get what it does for future literature (especially The Great Gatsby) but it's honestly just so overrated.

Gotta admit, I‘ve actually never read this book. But, it was beautiful. With drawings throughout like this one. And it was a dollar. I had to get it.

tournevis I have, I kid you not, read a children's adaptation of this, in French, as a child. Yeah. 6y

Lord Jim | Joseph Conrad

The ship moved so smoothly that her onward motion was imperceptible to the senses of men, as though she had been a crowded planet speeding through the dark spaces of ether behind the swarm of suns, in the appalling and calm solitudes awaiting the breath of future creations.

One of my current reads has a convenient cover for today's #bodyofwater prompt! Yup, that's my pencil as an emergency bookmark.

EchoLogical I mean are you even a bookworm if you've never used a writing utensil as a bookmark? 🤔 I'm not so sure... 😂 7y

I love used books ❤ There's such a strong sense of comfort in-between the pages of a book that's been used by God knows how many people.
Are you all more for used or new books??

Rachel.Rencher Used all the way 👐 7y
Kalalalatja I am on the new-side. I just love the feeling of opening up a brand new book, and being the first person to see into it. So I feel kinda opposite of you 😄 7y
HotCocoaReads I like both for different reasons! 7y
