This quote is in reference to the case of the online harassment of Matthew Herrick via Grindr and it's making me sick. I hadn't heard of this case until reading this book and I'm absolutely appalled. Grindr should be totally defunct from what they allowed to happen to this man.

From p. 260

This excerpt from the book is a bit confounding. I mean yay free speech and seeing the error of one's ways but Westboro undoubtedly engages in hate speech and Twitter amplified its voice.

MicheleinPhilly I find this “church” so abhorrent I can‘t bring myself to read this, even though she is a former member. I literally drank champagne to toast the passing of Fred Phelps. If hell exists, I hope he‘s roasting in it. 1w
EchoLogical @MicheleinPhilly @Lynnsoprano It was an okay read. I enjoyed her TED talk so I jumped at the chance to read this but after finishing it, I think I would've been okay without it. 1w

Are you kidding me?!

I totally didn't see that coming. Apparently, a lot of readers thought it was extremely predictable but psychological thrillers aren't my regular reads so spare me the theatrics. Lol. I'm kidding. Back to the book now. I enjoyed the audio. Great narration only improved the story.

EchoLogical @LoverofLit It's awful. They've already mentioned babies born with birth defects because of all the pesticides their parents have been exposed to and I feel sick. 3mo

LibrarianRyan @EchoLogical I need to pick up book one again. I was enjoying it, just not in the frame of mind to finish it at the time. It's in my seasonal pile for this month or next. 3mo
ashsbookmarks My library is only at 9 weeks. Thanks for reminding me to place my hold 😉 and I‘m sorry it‘s going to take so long for you 😭 #readerproblems 3mo
HOTPock3tt @EchoLogical Girl! I KNOW! The struggle!!! 😖 No one has it available except Scribd. So I started listening to it on audiobook this morning out of sheer desperation at the lack of access to it!! 🤕 just a fair warning though... it is REALLY badly done on audiobook 😫 the voice acting is terrible and it‘s kind of messing up my memory of the series... I‘m tempted to just wait for the actual book... but I need to know what happens! 😣 #ReaderProblems 3mo
HOTPock3tt @EchoLogical Just know that the Scribd app IS an option. They give a one month free trial. So you could listen to this particular book and then cancel it before the trial ends 🤔 I‘ve had Scribd for about 1 year and I like the service (despite the fact that the voice acting in this book isn‘t stellar.. I like Scribd overall) but it depends if you like audiobooks in general or not... (edited) 3mo
Schnoebs @HOTPock3tt I‘m so behind! I do have the Bookish box special edition box coming within the next week with my copy which I‘m excited about but I‘ve decided to do a reread but I couldnt get through the 3rd book so I‘m hoping to binge the entire thing this month! (edited) 3mo
Jess_Franzino If you have Amazon Prime you can get it at a discount. I got mine for $13.39 as opposed to $18.99. It‘s also available on Kindle for $10.99. 3mo
EchoLogical @ashsbookmarks I'm glad there's not a super long wait at your library. I'm hoping my local cooperative orders the e-book soon! 3mo
EchoLogical @HOTPock3tt I'm just gonna wait it out because I don't own any of the other books in the series. It sounds like Scribd isn't really the way to go because I'm only gonna get mad at listening to a terrible audiobook. LoL 3mo
EchoLogical @Schnoebs The 3rd book wasn't that good. I'm hoping this one makes up for it. 3mo
EchoLogical @Jess_Franzino I would buy it if I owned any of the other books in the series but I don't and I'm too broke to the buy them. 😅 3mo
Jess_Franzino @EchoLogical Maybe check out BookOutlet, they go SUPER low on the prices, or Books-A-Million. Not sure if they‘d have it marked down to $5 or $6 since it‘s a new release, but worth checking! If not, are there other libraries in your area? Also, give it a week or so and you can likely find used copies for waaaay less. 3mo
EchoLogical @Jess_Franzino Good idea! Checking now! 3mo
Jess_Franzino @EchoLogical I‘ll keep my eyes peeled for any lower prices and will let you know what I find. Even if you have to wait a week or two, it‘s MUCH better than waiting six months. Yikes! There are always markdowns on Kindle, too. Even if you don‘t own a Kindle, you can still download the app onto your phone ♥️ 3mo
The_Heeler_Booklife That is a long wait. 😳 For an audiobook format if you don‘t have audible, then you could always get it with a free month trial. And I totally forgot this book comes out soon. I haven‘t read the last book that came out still... 3mo

I absolutely must read this!

Has anyone else heard of the case of Anna Delvey, the fake German heiress/socialite. I heard about her on NPR awhile ago and prayed that someone would write a book about her story and they did! Please don't judge me, I'm obsessed with con artists and swindlers of all kind. 🤷🏾‍♀️😅

Megabooks I just finished the audiobook last night. Rachel has a curious combination of naïveté and maturity. The story is interesting, but I wouldn‘t recommend going audio because the narrator‘s voice is annoying. 4mo

Mehso-so

This was such a weird, disjointed book to me. I‘m giving it a so-so because I liked all the pieces, I just don‘t think they fit together the best way. Hopefully, that makes sense because I don‘t know how else to explain it.

2.5 Stars

The collage includes the rest of the books I read this month for my June book tic tac toe. My favorite reads were Truly Devious and With the FIre on High.

MusicallyMorgan Did you enjoy The Vanishing Stair as much as Truly Devious? I guess I read them too far apart, because I couldn‘t get into it! 5mo

The last paragraph really stuck with me because my husband argues this point when we talk about parenting. His favorite example is Lauryn Hill. I argue that it's her choice to make because despite what people like to say, I don't think you can have it all, all the time as a mother. Sorry, not sorry 🤷🏽‍♀️

Nute Stacked immediately!!! That hit home for me as well! 6mo
SW-T I saw an interview between Ashley Judd & Madeleine Albright on Iconoclasts. Ashley said she made choices based on what was most important to her, because you couldn‘t do everything well. Again, I‘ve been slacking on my Litsy posts so I‘ll just take a minute to share what I‘ve been reading this year. Everything above the green line was read this month. The tagged book is a small read filled with quotes that make the case for not keeping calm. Good stuff.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great job! And sounds like a great book! 6mo
EchoLogical @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks! It was nice break from all the novels I‘d been reading. It features a lot of funny, yet biting quotes on a bunch of different topics, life in general, the health of the planet, aging... Really anything that gives a cause for concern. If you like I can send you my copy. (edited) 6mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thank you so much for the offer, it looks like Hoopla has it and I can borrow it for free....so I‘ll decline and save you the shipping costs. Finally boarded the bandwagon and read this. Such a compelling story with such a complex MC. Evelyn wasn't very "likable" but her drive and self awareness were admirable. I predicted the connection between Monique and Evelyn pretty early on and I'm not sure if it was due to foreshadowing or plain old predictability.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

HOTPock3tt I adored this book! ♥️I guess I found Evelyn‘s drive in Hollywood to be realistic (or what I imagine is realistic in what it would take to become a star🤔) even if I didn‘t find her that likeable either 🤣 I loved the relationships in this book and the interactions between all the characters. Guys, I just started reading this which is a big deal because it's one of the first books I stacked here on Litsy. With that being said, what the heck do y'all have me reading?! I'm so confused by the storytelling. First, she's been interrogated at the airport, then she's at work avoiding Skype calls, then she's walking through the woods. How much time has passed? Why do we need to know this stuff. Please tell me it gets better!

I thought it was just okay. As the third book in the quartet, I expected things to really come to a head in this one but it really didn't live up to my expectations. RyeAnnUh 😁😁😁 I love litsy! I have made so many new friends! I live in the USA/ Love basically any YA with a map, favorite author is super hard! Probably Marissa Meyer or ...Richelle Mead, book rec... The Chemical Garden Trilogy. 10mo
EchoLogical @LadyCait84 I didn‘t discover her work until after her death and I‘m torn up about it every time I read one of her novels. 10mo
EchoLogical @RyeAnnUh Litsy really is the best! I love Marissa Meyer, especially 10mo
swliblady Love Radium Girls! 10mo
EchoLogical @swliblady I get chills every time I talk about it. 10mo
megzlynn I‘m from Alabama. My favorite author is Harper Lee. My favorite genre is probably mystery. My favorite recommendation is probably The Miss Peregrine‘s Home for Peculiar Children series. 10mo
CuriousG Octavia!!! One of my all time fav authors. Actually reading Wild Seed right now ❤ 10mo
FlowerFairy Hi! I‘m in Florida as well! 😁 10mo
EchoLogical @megzlynn Oh cool! I haven't read that series yet, even though I worked in the kids dept of a public library for 4 years. I'm such a slacker. 😆 10mo
EchoLogical @CuriousG How is it so far? 10mo
EchoLogical @FlowerFairy I'm down in the Keys and I hate it so much! What about you? 10mo
megzlynn @EchoLogical I suggest it. It is really good! 10mo
FlowerFairy I‘ve never been to the Keys. I‘m about a half hour south of the FL/GA line and approximately 1 hour north of Gainesville where I work. Hate the area where I live. Love working in Gainesville. 10mo
CuriousG @EchoLogical I've made it in 60 pages and am really enjoying it. That's saying quite a bit given that I've been in a huge reading slump and struggling to stick with anything. It's in what seems to be the same slow build up as you see in the Xenogenisis/Lilith's Brood series. Still really getting a feeling for the main characters and context of it all. Hoping it continues to hold my attention! 10mo
EchoLogical @FlowerFairy Florida really is a mixed bag, isn't it? Some parts are paradise and others feel more like hell. 😆 10mo
EchoLogical @CuriousG It sounds amazing. I'll definitely be checking that out. 10mo
businessmermaid Hi! Thanks for tagging me! ☺️ I‘m in Queens, NY, my favorite author is probably either Naomi Novik or Catherynne Valente, and my favorite recommendations are The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet and The Shining Girls. Great idea for getting to know each other! 10mo
Bklover I‘m not a new Litten, but played along anyway. I just bought Kindred today. Really looking forward to it. 10mo
olivia.ferz Thanks for tagging me. I'm from India. Fav genre-historical fiction. Fav author- Markus Zuasak, Book recs - The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and My sister's keeper by Jodi Picoult. 10mo
EchoLogical @businessmermaid I've been meaning to read something from Naomi Novik but haven't gotten around to it yet. 10mo
EchoLogical @olivia.ferz I love My Sister's Keeper but didn't care for the film. Have you seen it? 10mo
lele1432 @EchoLogical Hi! I'm late to the party as I was traveling yesterday, but thank you for the tag! I'm in Texas. I enjoy literary fiction but that encompasses so much...I'd say I'm partial to family sagas/historical fiction highlighting different cultures. I have different fav authors for different genres. Langston Hughes is one! A couple of fav book recs would be Cane River and (edited) 10mo
olivia.ferz @EchoLogical I have! I went in with so many expectations but it was just a huge disappointment for me. 10mo
EchoLogical @lele1432 Are you a Cowboys fan?! If so, we can't be friends. LoL. Totally kidding but I do root for Washington. 😋 10mo
EchoLogical @olivia.ferz Right?! It was such a let down...the casting, all the stuff they left out. Just all of it. 10mo
lele1432 @EchoLogical Ha! I'm not particularly but my husband definitely is lol. 😂 10mo
hannah-leeloo I'm from Leicester in the UK, my favourite genre has to be fantasy, YA, Sci fi and thriller. Favourite author..... Erm Terry pratchett, marissa Meyer and J K Rowling to name a few lol. Don't listen to audio books 🙃 x 10mo
ladyonequestion I'm Hannah, from Wales. Favourite genres are literary fiction and historical fiction, but I read from lots of different genres and have a crazy amount of books on the go at once! 10mo
LeshaMac @EchoLogical I'm from Cincinnati, Ohio. My fav genre I'd urban fiction for the moment, but love lots of others. My fav author is desiree Granger. My fav rec is the weight of zero 9mo

Loved this enchanting tale of a small river town and how it's turned upside when an injured man washes ashore the Thames River with the body of a small girl in his grasp.

Initially, the story was hard to follow with so many characters but as it progressed, their connections were made clear and it became easier to keep track.

Liatrek I‘ve been in love with Keanu since Bill and Ted 😊 And omg yes why hasn‘t Kindred been made into a movie! I honestly would love to see any of her books adapted especially Parable of the Sower. 10mo
EchoLogical @Liatrek I wonder if we could start a petition and get Lupita to star as Dana! 10mo
Liatrek @EchoLogical Omg that would be perfect casting! 10mo

Not really book related at all but does anyone play Words With Friends? I use it (and reading, of course) to battle mom brain. 😆 Not sure if it's helping. Either way, feel free to send me a game request.

riversong153 I used to lol, but I would always forget to make a move during my turn! 10mo
4thhouseontheleft I used to play, but it‘s been a long time! 10mo
EchoLogical @riversong153 @4thhouseontheleft I played awhile ago and deleted from my phone when I needed memory but reinstalled it when my husband deployed because we usually play it together when he's away. 10mo

AlaMich I‘ll play with you! 😊 I‘m Alamich in WWF too, and I just invited you to play. (edited) 10mo
EchoLogical @AlaMich Yay!!!! 10mo
AlaMich @EchoLogical I get the feeling I may not be much of a challenge for you, though. 10mo
EchoLogical @AlaMich I‘m sure you will. I occasionally get lucky with a good set of letters but usually I lose at the end. LoL 10mo

The Coldest Winter Ever | Sister Souljah

Mehso-so

Slowly checking off items from my #blackandbookedchallenge. This one was difficult to read because I'm not a fan of contemporary urban fiction at all but I'll attempt to separate the book from the genre...

An unlikable MC and generally little action did nothing to win me over BUT I couldn't stop reading, if only to see Winter get what was coming to her. Make of that what you will.

⭐⭐⭐

lele1432 I felt the same way! I didn't end up finishing the book when I tried reading it last year because it was due back to the library. I have a hold on it right just so I can see what happens lol. I hated the MC and didn't really enjoy the half I did read. Not my cup of tea at all. 10mo

I thought about using a less abrasive quote but decided this was most fitting for such a moving book. I didn't like it because it really wasn't "enjoyable" material but it stuck with me.

EchoLogical @greeniezona Jealous! That's awesome. Which books were they? 11mo
greeniezona From her series of science books for kids, Journey through the Solar System, and Discovering New Planets. 11mo
Liatrek Octavia Butler is so amazing! I will be reading Lillith Brood this year. 11mo
Chelleo @EchoLogical did you read the picture book about Mae Jemison? I‘ll find the name. 11mo
EchoLogical @Liatrek I think you'll love it 11mo
EchoLogical @Chelleo I haven't yet 11mo
CuriousG YES - to Octavia Butler!! Read 6 of her novels so far and every one amazing, and just got the Wild Seed series for Christmas 🙌 11mo
EchoLogical @CuriousG She was amazing. I seriously want to cry every time I think about the fact that she's no longer around to share her stories with the world. 11mo
CuriousG @EchoLogical OMG - that is exactly how I feel about her and the loss of her brilliance and heart! 💙 I bought the book 'Conversations with Octavia Butler' and I love it so much. If you don't have it, you need it. It's a compilation of interviews wuth her/editorials about her. The closest to hearing her speak that can happen now 11mo

This actually wasn‘t that hard... Chocolate and books were picked with no hesitation but the third pick came down to Netflix and jeans. I picked jeans because they keep my postpartum pooch in check. Netflix can‘t do that yet. 😂

An account I follow on IG posted this and I've adapted it as a reading challenge for this year because clearly I'm slacking on important black reads. 😔 The items crossed out are things I have read. Everything else, I haven't. So if my #blitsyhistorymonth match is reading this... Hint hint!

#blackandbookedchallenge

IamIamIam Hidden Figures was spectacular!!! Those women were true heroes! 11mo

ProfReader You have some great titles on your list. I read some of theses novels in college. 11mo
EchoLogical @IamIamIam I look forward to reading about them. 11mo
EchoLogical @Tamra I mostly agree but there are few here that I‘d never given a second look if not for this list, like Push and The Color Purple because I‘d imagine they‘re pretty difficult reads but I‘m trying to step a little outside of my comfort zone. 11mo
EchoLogical @LoverofLit Oh cool! Let me know if you read any of them. 🙂 11mo
Chelleo Great idea to post for your match! Try The Color Purple...it was a great read and relatively short. 11mo
EchoLogical @Chelleo Good to know! Don‘t revoke my black card for this but I‘ve never even seen the movie all the way through. 😬 11mo
Chelleo @EchoLogical Hold up! What?! Girl! 🤦🏾‍♀️ 11mo
EchoLogical @Chelleo The whole "struggly black people" narrative makes me angry and to top it off, I'm not much of a movie buff. There are tons of classics I haven't watched. ??‍♀️ 11mo
