To be fair I did not want to write a review because of my own internal conflicts…. I went into this not knowing it is specifically Christian fantasy. I started to wonder as i was reading it and visited goodreads. The good- it‘s an interesting story with decent writing- dreamwalking, the family has unusual dynamics, world building ok- But i am really angry with the christian nationalism occurring. 👇

Chrissyreadit So i am often wondering is this someone evangelizing but ok with the current budget bill, tax cuts for billionaires and loss of medical coverage for millions? Is this someone ok with people being kidnapped and placed in prison with no justification? So i‘m sad, because reading is entertainment but it is also education, communication, community building and idea sharing. I think this was a good story but good vs evil does not translate the same. 2d
Chrissyreadit I hope this makes sense- and i hope i can learn and grow enough to have less bias toward privileged white people who do not really love the least of these…. well actually im ok with that bias i just hope i can be a kind loving person who enjoys reading. 2d
TheBookHippie I have this with authors!!!! And those who hide about it like Emily Henry is alt right evangelical but pretends she isn‘t she scrubbed everything from her website but in print in her first books it‘s all there in the acknowledgements. 😝😵‍💫 I agree. It‘s a struggle. (FYI Emily went to the Christian college here. I knew about her before she went BIG) 2d

Martyn_J_Pass Although it‘s impossible to completely expunge the author‘s particular views when writing (nor should they), I do get annoyed when Christian authors crowbar in their particular bugbear or favourite aspect of theology. If it‘s not the highly disputed version of eschatology, it‘s an over emphasis on angelic beings or heavy handed exposition. 2d
IriDas Online it looks like she‘s trying to be neutral, which means she‘s probably Right, because Libs and Leftists and Anarchists are done with this s***. 😂 2d
Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie SHIT!!! i did not know that about Emily Henry- she is no longer on my reading list from now on. 2d
Chrissyreadit @Martyn_J_Pass @IriDas thank you for your thoughtful understanding responses! 2d
TheBookHippie @IriDas oh you are so right!!!! 2d
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 2d
Susanita I understand completely about religious overtones. It can often be an intrusion regardless of one's personal views, and a little goes a long way. If it's central to a character's life and they live it out, maybe. But I know that's not always the case. At the same time, I can think of at least one author who goes in quite the other direction, and I find that off-putting as well. 2d
IriDas I tried to look further because her husband is a pastor so I knew if he‘s Right, she‘d obey him. He definitely talks like a Right leaning pastor, but I had to stop looking because DuckDuckGo took me places that were awful and sad. Like The Gospel Coalition—a group that is popular in the Fundamentalist churches I attended and raised my older kids in, to their detriment. :( 2d
AmyG @TheBookHippie I didn‘t know that either about Emily Henry. I understand someone writing with bias, it‘s only human. But if I feel it‘s too “preachy”, no matter what the bias, I‘m out. What you said @Chrissyreadit. (edited) 2d
TheBookHippie @AmyG remember we read her first book and she had all the Jesus things in the book and in the acknowledgements? 2d
AmyG @TheBookHippie 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣NO 2d
TheBookHippie @AmyG 🤭🤭🤭😂😂😂 2d
Bookwomble @IriDas Somebody else who uses DuckDuckGo! I knew it couldn't just be me! 😜 (edited) 11h
Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie just returned my book hold for an emily henry now that she‘s off my reading list 🤣 6h
Chrissyreadit @IriDas we do the best we can with what we know and indoctrination is brutal- because we are also hard wired to need community and belonging- I have to admit you probably have more insight than most outsiders to how controlling it is and how hard to escape from. 6h
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit 😂😂😂😂 6h
TheBookHippie @Bookwomble I use it too!!! @IriDas GODUCKGO 👋🏻 6h
Bookwomble @TheBookHippie @IriDas Taking down G00gle one search at a time! 😄🦆🦆🟢 6h

In Mark of the Raven, @morganlbusse creates a new world full of gifts and realms. She does a wonderful job of taking the reader on a journey, far from the real world. Whilst I love fantasy novels, I get impatient for the action to start. It takes to about halfway through the novel for the story really takes off. [ 263 more words ]

In a richly built world full of political intrigue, Lady Selene begins learning to use her family‘s secret gift. By entering dreams, she gains insight into secrets and fears, as well as the power to manipulate and control. Action, adventure, and the beginnings of romance abound in this book, and I absolutely loved it.
