Act Natural: A Cultural History of Misadventures in Parenting | Jennifer Traig
12 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
From a distinctive, inimitable voice, a wickedly funny and fascinating romp through the strange and often contradictory history of Western parenting Why do we read our kids fairy tales about homicidal stepparents? How did helicopter parenting develop if it used to be perfectly socially acceptable to abandon your children? Why do we encourage our babies to crawl if crawling wont help them learn to walk? These are just some of the questions that came to Jennifer Traig whenexhausted, frazzled, and at sea after the birth of her two childrenshe began to interrogate the traditional parenting advice shed been conditioned to accept at face value. The result is Act Natural, hilarious and deft dissection of the history of Western parenting, written with the signature biting wit and deep insights Traig has become known for. Moving from ancient Rome to Puritan New England to the Dr. Spock craze of mid-century America, Traig cheerfully explores historic and present-day parenting techniques ranging from the misguided, to the nonsensical, to the truly horrifying. Be it childbirth, breastfeeding, or the ways in which we teach children how to sleep, walk, eat, and talk, she leaves no stone unturned in her quest for answers: Have our techniques actually evolved into something better? Or are we still just scrambling in the dark?

⭐⭐⭐⭐
An enjoyable look at the history of parenting. From the odd to the horrifying to the ever changing world of parenting advice, Traig writes in an enjoyable style that keeps you engaged.
I learned quite a bit about the roots of many modern-day trends and ideas.
To summarize - it's truly a miracle we are on this planet. With all the misunderstanding and horrifying practices of years past I'm shocked we've made it this far.

Back in the day parents told kids some pretty messed up stuff to scare them into obedience. But then again adults actually did some pretty messed up stuff for real. Like this guy, looking for fat for his HUMAN SOAP!!! ??

"Romasanta has become part of Spanish folklore...as The Tallow Man, a nickname he earned for rendering his victims' fat to make high-quality soap."

Who thought the coconut has such a #spooky history??
? ?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coco_(folklore)

"The myth of the Coco, or Cucuy, originated in Portugal and Galicia. According to the Real Academia Española, the word coco derives from the Galician and Portuguese côco [ˈko.ku], which means "coconut".[2] The word coco is used in colloquial speech to refer to the human head in Spanish.[3] Coco also means "skull".

What did experts recommend for handling kids back in the day? Cocaine. Yep, the energy stimulant. Cocaine. Parents, if you're reading this, you're doing just fine 😄 #parenting #parents #audiobook #Nonfiction

Smrloomis 😳 Cocaine. Now that would make the kids pretty hard to handle... 4y

"Medieval childcare books are generally very stern and preachy. They are still fun for the modern reader, however, because early printers used a long s that, to the modern eye, looks just like an f. Since the books tend to dwell at length on breastfeeding, you read a lot about getting the fuckling infant to fuckle."

Good book on the history of parenting and childhood. It has a balanced tone straddling academic and conversational or amusing. #nonfiction

I have a stack of books due at the library before this one, but I can‘t stop reading it every chance I get. I love the history of parenting and children and it‘s amusing with a somewhat conversational tone.
