This parenting book resonated with me more than any other I‘ve read. Its main goal is to help you raise kids who are able to make decisions for themselves in a safe environment at home that will translate well when they‘re out of your house. They talk about how helicopter or drill sergeant parents limit kids‘ maturity, while consultant parents help their kids learn through natural consequences. The key is empathy while still allowing them to fail.
Currently only through Part l but it‘s already such a good read.
This should read by everyone who deals with children.
Children need to be dependent on you, they should never question your ability to take care of them and their needs.
- the example for this was so interesting! >
It seems unreal that I‘ll have a teenager in a few years! This book helped me prepare both my emotions and how to tackle tough conversations with my boys. The main goal is to inform and keep channels of communication open. I hope to approach this puberty stuff with humor and understanding. I‘ll need to revisit this book often, as it does a great job of defining each concept (ie-body hair), how it‘s changed over time and how to talk about it.
I love Clint Smith‘s writing. This includes some of his keen and straightforward social analysis, always with an eye on historical context. But also a lot of sweetness about young fatherhood.
This is a really important book that all parents and educators should read. It shows how the epidemic of mental illness stems directly from our shift from ‘play based‘ to ‘phone based‘ childhoods. The data and evidence in this book is truly mind blowing. I had not heard the term ‘sociogenic illnesses‘ before but it makes total sense to me and something I‘ve long suspected is happening. It‘s not all doom and gloom. There are solutions. Read it!
My babygirl is officially 2 months old! I'm already sobbing she's getting so big so fast I hate/love it.
