Brave Face: A Memoir | Shaun David Hutchinson
9 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Critically acclaimed author of We Are the Antsdescribed as having hints of Vonneguts Slaughterhouse-Five (School Library Journal)opens up about what led to an attempted suicide in his teens, and his path back from the experience. I wasnt depressed because I was gay. I was depressed and gay. Shaun David Hutchinson was nineteen. Confused. Struggling to find the vocabulary to understand and accept who he was and how he fit into a community in which he couldnt see himself. The voice of depression told him that he would never be loved or wanted, while powerful and hurtful messages from society told him that being gay meant love and happiness werent for him. A million moments large and small over the years all came together to convince Shaun that he couldnt keep going, that he had no future. And so he followed through on trying to make that a reality. Thankfully Shaun survived, and over time, came to embrace how grateful he is and how to find self-acceptance. In this courageous and deeply honest memoir, Shaun takes readers through the journey of what brought him to the edge, and what has helped him truly believe that it does get better.

Fantastic read!

Brave Face has a lot of trigger warnings, but I am so thankful to Shaun for telling his story. Although this book is about a young gay man, I feel teens, regardless of their sexuality, will find a piece of themselves here.

These are the books we need for young people to remind them they are not alone and to help them cope with all the emotions that come with growing up and learning to be comfortable in their own skin.

This is such an important book. Seeing that Shaun David Hutchinson grew up in Florida, this book makes the “don‘t say gay” law even more heartbreaking and tragic than it already was. We need to day way better than that by the children of this country, and the world.

GingerAntics It‘s important because he talks honestly and genuinely about mental health, needing and getting help, and coming out the other end stronger. I‘ve been in my own mental health funk lately. This book didn‘t magically make it all better, but it did remind me that things will get better eventually. #ShaunDavidHutchinson #BraveFace #PrideMonth #LGBTQ 3y

I loved this book because it highlighted the unique challenges of navigating mental illness and a queer/ace Identity.

This week‘s round up: memoir, thrillers, rom-coms, and more. Though geared to teens they all have adult crossover appeal. Look the books up here on Litsy or see my thoughts on my blog: https://www.bethfishreads.com/2019/05/7-contemporary-stories-that-tackle.html?m=...

I'll be honest, I didn't love this as much as I wanted to. I love SDH's fiction so I was really hoping for something great from him memoir & it fell a little short for me. It's really important in a lot of way--very frank discussions of depression, self harm, suicidal thoughts, sexuality, internalized homophobia, etc-- but the narrative structure (particularly in the first half) was just kind of flimsy. Glad I read it, but I wasn't blown away.
