He's Not My Boyfriend
He's Not My Boyfriend: Chin-Williams | Jackie Lau
9 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Now that her cousin has tied the knot, Iris Chin--structural engineer, party girl, and queen of kitchen disasters--is the last single grandchild. Her mother and grandmother are desperate to play matchmaker, though Iris doesn't understand why. They had miserable marriages, and she doesn't want to be like them. She enjoys her independence, thank you very much. One-night stands are more her style. Unfortunately, she soon discovers that she's working on a project with her latest one-night stand, Alex Kwong, a construction supervisor. She's determined to stay professional on the construction site, but things get off to a bad start when Alex lets slip to a co-worker that they slept together. To make matters worse, Iris is now living with her grandmother, who keeps stealthily setting her up on dates and sticking her nose where it doesn't belong, and her mother is just as bad. But more than anything, it's her unwanted feelings for Alex that are derailing her plans to have an exciting single life...

This was my latest romance read and it was so much fun. Two people who definitely don‘t want relationships find themselves in a relationship. And there‘s a meddling granny and it‘s delightful.

Just got back from a girls weekend away and managed to get some new books from my favorite bookstore The Ripped Bodice 💕💕💕. Cannot wait to read one tonight snuggled up in my own bed 🙌🙌🙌.

This was a bit of an odd duck. I loved Iris‘s let-me-be-single battle with her relatives, especially where it overlapped with her deepening connection to her awesome grandma. I felt for Alex as he processed his grief. I appreciated how both characters supported one another and worked on their friendship.

But I didn‘t feel them as a couple. In fact, I actively rooted for Iris to keep her single life, with Alex as a sometimes-we-have-sex friend.

Supper was pretty great.

kgriffith Poutine(ish)?? Looks yum 😍 6y
xicanti @kgriffith fake poutine: tater tots topped with regular old cheese (because curds are expensive) and chalet sauce. 6y
kgriffith @xicanti I‘m down. 6y

I giggled my way through a couple more chapters of my first Jackie Lau while I drank a free Americano and ate a not-free (but tasty) strawberry pie.

writerlibrarian That one is in my kindle to read queue. 🙂 6y
Bkwrm7 I just impulse bought a couple of Jackie Lau's a week or so ago. Looking forward to hearing what you think! 6y

I mostly like this book so far, but I‘m on chapter two and this is the third dig at gose. Booooooo. It doesn‘t taste like shit. It‘s citrusy, not plain old sour, and the salt comes through at the finish in a TRULY DELIGHTFUL way.

Basically, gose is the best. I‘m bummed it hardly ever shows up in Manitoba. There wasn‘t a ton available on my last trip to BC, either, so I fear lots of drinkers agree with Alex and it‘s on its way out. 😭

emtobiasz Oh no! I love gose too, but there‘s lots available here in PA! I think a lot of microbreweries picked them up as fun warm weather beers. But then, I hate IPAs too, so according to this book, what do I know 🤷‍♀️ 6y
xicanti @emtobiasz I envy your gose access! I end up drinking Hoegaarden, a Belgian beer that‘s similar, and pouncing on any goses that do make it into my Liquor Mart. Last year they got a few bottles of my favourite (Cry Me A River by Driftwood Brewery out of Victoria, BC), and I felt like I‘d won the beer lottery. 6y
TaraTLK I am a fruity drinker. Although here we've got a gose style cider which I enjoyed. 6y
xicanti @TaraTLK ooh! I wish I could try that. 6y
TaraTLK Hopefully it will catch on. 6y

Me: I probably won‘t make it back to the Book Market, so no more book purchases in April!

Kobo: listen, this Jackie Lau romcom‘s on for $0.99.

Jackie Lau Romcom: *makes me snicker multiple times throughout the sample*

Me: aw, damn.

I am in love with Jackie Lau's diverse romantic comedy novels. I discovered her based on a rec from the Bawdy Bookworms FB group and I'm so glad! They're smart, funny, and the tagged book made me miss my grandmother so much. 💔

Cantonese-Canadian heroines. Sassy grandmothers. Flawed and real characters. Love them.

Also, damn her for making me cry like a baby during HE'S NOT MY BOYFRIEND. ⬇️

silentrequiem Grumpy Fake Boyfriend was easily the weakest of the lot, and the first I read. But I'm glad I kept reading. The rest are a good mixture of funny, steamy, and serious. Also, yes, the titles are godawful. It took me a bit to get over that. 6y
