Harnessing Peacocks (Revised)
Harnessing Peacocks (Revised) | Mary Wesley
5 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
A compartmentalized life becomes entangled. Hebe listens in the darkness of the hall to a family conference. Her stern grandfather and the others are discussing Hebe's unexpected pregnancy. The decision, unanimous, is that it be terminated. Hebe, dissenting, flees into the night. Twelve summers later she is living happily alone with her son in a seaside town where he is receiving an expensive education. Hebe has organized her life oddly but well. She has two chief talents in life -- cooking and making love -- and these she has exercised with dignity, in privacy and for profit. It is when separated strands of the web of Hebe's life becomes entangled that the even tenor of her days is threatened, and her life changes.

Any excuse to post a photo of my twins 🐶🐶🤣 here book 📕 shopping with mummy 🤗 another Mary Wesley ticked off the back catalog; I love ❤️ her writing ✍️ it is of a time 🕰️ and certain comments and observations wouldn‘t be made now (hopefully Wev progressed but sometimes I wonder 💭 why we don‘t seem to learn from history ) anyway it took me back to the 80s & uk 🇬🇧 holidays by the coast. I‘d say If you loved rivals you‘ll love ❤️ this

I was thrilled to find a Mary Wesley at the Book Swap today! I was up & at it early considering it‘s summer holidays. All the tourists are in town so I tried the baths but it was hard to get a seat that wasn‘t uncomfortably close to someone in these covid times. I also managed to get my partner to the shops. No mean feat. I also got him into the change room and he bought a shirt. Success! I left him in the Apple store after & went op shopping.

Jeg Sometime ago an older friend put me on to Mary Wesley. Interesting woman for her times. I really enjoy her books. 3y

This is Mary Wesley's third novel, published at 75. It is the story of Hebe, who is raised by her grandparents. She is pregnant and they want her to have an abortion, so she runs away. The story picks up years later as we find Hebe makes no a living for her and her son by cooking for elderly folks and supplanting her income by sleeping with their sons. This is a sweet story about complicated relationships. #recommendsday
