Death in a Promised Land
Death in a Promised Land: The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 | Scott Ellsworth
7 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
When a crows began to gather outside the jail in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on the evening of May 31, 1921., the fate of one of its prisoners, a young black male, seemed assured. Accused of attempting to rape a white woman, Dick Rowland was with little doubt about to be lynched. But in another part of town, a small group of black men, many of them World War I veterans, decided to risk lives for a different vision of justice. Before it was all over, Tulsa had erupted into one of America's worst racial nightmares, leaving scores dead and hundreds of homes and businesses destroyed. Exhaustively researched, 'Death in a Promised Land' is compelling story of racial ideologies, southwestern politics, and yellow journalism, and of an embattled black community's struggle to hold onto its land and freedom. More than just the chronicle of one of the nation's most devastating race riots, this critically acclaimed study of American race relations is, above all, a gripping story of terror and lawlessness, and of courage, hedonism, and human perserverance.

A deeply researched, highly readable account of the Tulsa Race Massacre. This excellent narrative nonfiction gives the reader an idea of the local situation that led up to the Massacre, the Massacre itself, and the aftermath. Given how much of the story has been lost, and that the people are now gone, this account is vital.

Ellsworth provides many details about the causes and effects of the 1921 riot in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which ties into America‘s turbulent history of race relations and racial cruelty during this timeframe. Find out what happened to the once successful black Tulsa community, but prepared to experience feelings of sadness, disgust, and anger.

Did you know the Gap Band was from Tulsa, Oklahoma? My mother‘s favorite song was Party Train. I still remember her washing the dishes and me drying the dishes when I was little. 😃😁😄

KB253 I knew that because I saw them on Soul Train way back in the day😉 great song to do chores to! 6y
