To make matters worse, the gang of thieving Desert Boys, the same group that killed Kateris mother and her new baby, frequently raids the city wells and steals water, forcing the king to ration what little water is left. The punishment for stealing water is the choice between two doors. Behind one door lies freedom and behind the other is a tiger. The people of Achra are growing restless and distrustful of the monarchy, and when Kateris final opponent is announced, she knows she cannot win. In her desperation, Kateri turns to the desert and the one person she never thought shed side with. This is a YA fantasy retelling of the short story “The Lady or the Tiger?” It was a quick, fun read full of action. The setting of a once lovely oasis city now trapped within the desert with severe water rationing was interesting. None of the events really surprised me, other than I did wonder a few times how similarly the ending would compare to the original.

Loved this stand alone second book by Annie Sullivan! Kateri is full of rage and it was fun watching her learn how to harness that throughout her story!

Annie Sullivan acknowledges the roots of her novel Tiger Queen in the book‘s epigraph in which she thanks her “middle school English teacher, Mrs. Desautels, for first asking the question, ‘The lady or the tiger?‘” As a fan of retellings of classic literature, I was hooked. ⬇️

It's like The Valiant had a baby with Aladdin big Jasmine becomes the street rat kinda...

This was really cool and honestly a little darker than I was expecting. I am really impressed with how well the battle/combat scenes at the end were written. Only complaint was the epilogue seemed very short and rushed and it just confirmed things I assumed would happen. It wasn't totally necessary.

Now I need to go reread the original short story

It's finally go time! Annie was so sweet to send me an ARC and I have been quite vocal that I want retellings of something other than Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella *enters retelling of Frank Stockton's short story "The Lady, or the Tiger"*

This book was fast paced and thrilling from beginning to end. Tiger Queen is beautifully written and captivating. Annie Sullivan keeps you guessing throughout the book. I loved all of the characters in this book and found myself rooting for them until the very end. I highly recommend this book to any fantasy reader looking for a fresh new take on a fairy tale retelling. Released Sept. 10, 2019⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #netgalley #ARC #24B4Monday
