Gittel‘s Journey written by Lesléa Newman and illustrated by June Bates tells the story of a little girl who must immigrate to America alone. Her mother is stopped by health inspectors and Gittel takes the journey alone. As she arrives in America she realizes the note with the address to her family is damaged and she has to find her way again.

This HF book is about a little girl who is supposed to immigrate with her mother to the U.S. Before they board her mother is told she isn‘t allowed to travel due to her being ill. Gittel travels alone and meets up with a family member and is able to reunite with her mother later on. In the story it demonstrates bravery and courage which students would love during IR. The award given to this picture book was the Sydney Taylor Medal.

LizzettM The UDL principle I would use is (2.4)promote understanding across languages since the book incorporates another language. The EL strategy 12, would help them understand language and content since there would be another language they need to comprehend along with English.

DrSpalding You may have not taken social studies yet however this would make an excellent read aloud in a social studies unit in second grade. I currently have a group working on an immigration/Ellis island unit. Excellent choice! Is she a real girl or fictitious? Obviously if she is real, it is a biography. 4y

DrSpalding A couple of you read this book. As long as she is not a real person, this would be considered historical fiction. However if she is realā€¦ This would be what genre? This would be another great book to use in social studies. 4y
