Crankenstein | Samantha Berger

This F book would be a perfect read aloud on a difficult day. This books shows a little boy as Crankenstein and how miserable he is until he encounters another Crankenstein and they learn that they can make it go away with some laughter. Students will really connect with the story and want to read on.

LizzettM The UDL Principle (7.2) optimize relevance, value, and authenticity. This will show that it's okay to be upset sometimes but it is important to be happy too. The EL strategy 19, establish predictable classroom routines through the use of an outline on the board or bulletin board is nice for students to see how it can relate in their environment. This book won the E.B White Read Aloud Award.

juliap99 This book seems like a great idea to share when students are having a bad day! I like the idea to have an outline on your bulletin board ! 4y
DrSpalding You have included all necessary elements of the rubric! Of course a read aloud for a read aloud award winner. Be sure to expand on your resource from the author. 4y

I could not find “Never Let a Unicorn Scribble!“ so I selected this one to show the author Diane Alber. This book is a modern fantasy about a little girl who has a unicorn and she breaks the rules and allows the unicorn to color. The unicorn ends up filling her room with sparkly scribbles. At the end, the mother finds the unique art work on a canvas not all over the room.

LizzettM This book would be a great read aloud for students in encouraging them to be creative. The UDL Principle (3.3), guide information processing and visualization and EL strategy 8, using direct instruction.

This F story is about a dinosaur named Penelope who goes to school for the first time. She finds out her classmates are children and she immediately starts eating them. Penelope learns at the end that in order to make friends she has to treat them the way she would like to get treated. Students can read this with their teacher and see different point of views of the text.

LizzettM The UDL Principle (9.3) will allow students to reflect on the story and see what they believe. EL strategy 20, listing the most important words and phrases on the bard to remind the students to keep a look out on those words. This book won the Mitten Award Honor.

This F story would be a great storytelling for young readers. It is about a spoon and how he compares himself to his other friends like fork and knife. Little does he know they admire him for what he does. He learns at the end all of they things he should be grateful for. The UDL Principle I would choose for this book is (3.2) highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. This will help students through the story.

LizzettM The EL strategy 11, place language in meaningful context will guide them on what the theme of the story is.

Ruby Finds a Worry | Tom Percival

Pickpick

This book is F and it's about a girl named Ruby and she has a worry. She sees this worry as a yellow circle that follows her around. She becomes more worried about having it around and the worry becomes bigger. Ruby learns how to overcome her worry and she talks to a friend about how she is feeling. Shocking enough the worry begins to fade away. This is a great lesson for students to learn.

LizzettM Teach think, pair and share strategies in a cooperative partner reading, EL strategy 10 will allow students to work together and build on what they know. The UDL principle (6.1) guide appropriate goal setting just like Ruby learned within the book.

I loved this book! This F story is about a little monkey who is told he looks grumpy over and over by his friends and then he suddenly becomes grumpy and feels bad about feeling down. He finds another friend who is also Grumpy and he tells him that it is a great day to be grumpy and they both start feeling better.

LizzettM I think this book focuses on (8.2) vary demands and resources to optimize challenge. The EL strategy I would use is 17, provide contextual support through audio visuals, models,
demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions. This book was New York Times Bestseller.

This F book is so sweet. It is about dragons and how much they love tacos but it is important to not give them any spicy salsa. If the dragons have any spicy salsa they shoot sparkles and smoke comes out of their ears. I think this book would be a great reenactment within the class for students to demonstrate. This book won the Young Readers Choice Award.

LizzettM The UDL Principle I would choose is (7.3) minimize threats and distractions so student can enjoy reenacting the story. The EL strategy 15, going over key ideas so it will be simpler to understand.

This F book was super cute to read. It was about a little mouse and what happens when he has a cookie. It talks about a variety of different tasks he completes and it leads him back to another glass of milk and of course another cookie. This book one the Georgia Children‘s Picture Storybook Award. Children will love this book as a read aloud in a circle on the carpet.

LizzettM The UDL Principle I would choose for this reading is (3.1) activate or supply background knowledge. The EL strategy 14, will allow students to understand the story when the teacher is reading it slower and emphasize on critical features.

What If the Bus Doesn't Come? | Lamont Ginette Clarke, Ginette Lamont Clarke

This RF picture book is about a brother and a sister over packing because they are unsure if the bus will bring them home from school. They make plans to bring everything they may need in case the bus doesn‘t show up. The UDL Principle (8.1) heighten salience of goals and objectives would work great for students to understand how Mark and Melanie planned their goals throughout the story.

LizzettM EL strategy 3, encourage self talk would be great for the students to discuss during a read aloud to the class. They can gather information from one another. I have attached a school bus safety video so students can relate to the text.

DrSpalding What a wonderful book to include in a science unit. Fun fact: I had a mobile garden that my first graders planted and took care of. It was in a Radio Flyer wagon. The gardener for the day would roll it out to the sunshine for rain during the school day and bring it back inside the classroom before we went home. LizzettM This book is perfect for a read aloud demonstrating the UDL principle (6.2) Support planning and strategy development since in the story it goes over the scientific method. The EL strategy I would use is 14, simplifying speech because this book could be difficult to understand.

This HF book is about a little girl who is supposed to immigrate with her mother to the U.S. Before they board her mother is told she isn‘t allowed to travel due to her being ill. Gittel travels alone and meets up with a family member and is able to reunite with her mother later on. In the story it demonstrates bravery and courage which students would love during IR. The award given to this picture book was the Sydney Taylor Medal.

LizzettM The UDL principle I would use is (2.4)promote understanding across languages since the book incorporates another language. The EL strategy 12, would help them understand language and content since there would be another language they need to comprehend along with English.

I used to be scared of this story growing up😂 The book is about a boy who is told to go to his room for behaving like a “wild thing”. While in his room he suddenly enters to a land filled with wild things. He then becomes the king of all wild things. This fantasy book has a Caldecott medal and would be a great IR. The UDL principle I would use is (9.1), promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation.
