In America's Gulf Coast region, where grounded oil tankers are being broken down for parts, Nailer, a teenage boy, works the light crew, scavenging for copper wiring just to make quota--and hopefully live to see another day. But when, by luck or chance, he discovers an exquisite clipper ship beached during a recent hurricane, Nailer faces the most important decision of his life: Strip the ship for all it's worth or rescue its lone survivor, a beautiful and wealthy girl who could lead him to a better life. . . . In this powerful novel, award-winning author Paolo Bacigalupi delivers a thrilling, fast-paced adventure set in a vivid and raw, uncertain future.

YA. When Nailer and Pima find a ship after a storm, all they can think about is the scavenge for wealth. Instead, they find a human who changes their view of life, making them the richer for it, but not before they learn that Ship Breaker and Swanks can work together without fear and hatred.

Unfortunately for me, I think I‘m a bit old for this. A younger version of myself probably would have really liked this and jumped into the sequel/companion novel right away. As it was, this book was just ok for me. Despite the next 2 books centering around a much more interesting secondary character, I just don‘t feel compelled to continue on. This year has been one of being brutally honest with myself about what books to keep and read.

I enjoyed this one, though the world was a terrible dystopia and horrible awful things happen to children. I‘m counting it as my book about #friendship for #booked2018 seasonal challenge. It is hard for these children to find friendship, the world is so awful, but when they find it they hold to it fiercely! @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

In some sort of dystopian future, Nailer, works on a Light Crew, scavenging beached oil tankers in the Gulf Coast region. Life is hard & day-to-day, between the dangerous work & his abusive father at home. All that starts to change when he and his friend stumble onto a wrecked clipper and the chance for the greatest scavenge he'll likely ever have.
I liked this one just fine, but probably not enough for me to seek out the next book in the series.

Not my usual read, was suggested for me by one of my students. Slow to start off, but eventually I was caught up in the characters. Good YA literature.

The pacing was great and while there was always something happening, I found myself not really caring about the outcome. Every time I started feeling something for Nailer, he did something that made me dislike him again. I must give the author credit for doing a great job of letting you forget that you're reading about kids and then reminding you of the fact through a very simple and childish act. Definitely not a bad book, just not for me.

My science-fiction and fantasy TBR pile of books that I've bought...not including e-books...or other genres. Ship Breaker is high on my priority list right now. You may be next! Unless the library starts putting the due date pressure on.

One of the students I tutor, a 13-year-old math whiz who struggles with reading, told me she hates this dystopian novel, one of her assigned summer books. I'm about to see what all her fuss is about.

MrBook Welcome to @Litsy ! Please enjoy your stay 😎👍🏻. 8y
8leagueboot I enjoyed that one, even though the beginning felt a little slow; I wonder what she didn't like about it? Sidenote: the real life ship breaking yards that inspired this one are fascinating! 8y

This was a great book! It was recommended if you enjoyed The Chaos Walking series. It certainly had that feel with the writing and characters. I really liked the "after Orleans" world they were living in. The sea levels had risen destroying America. The kids would scavenge old tankers for copper and metal to make money but some rewards are bigger than others! I recommend for an entertaining and enjoyable read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

CaitlinSiem I've owned this for a while now but haven't read it yet. I'm glad to know you enjoyed it. Might have to shimmy this up on the ole TBR a little. 8y
