pickSquib surprised me at how dark it is but also how brilliantly Nina Bawden writes about the thoughts and feelings of children and the ways in which they might handle difficult situations. A full review would have to spoil the plot for this book so I'll just end with a note on the gorgeous cover art of the puffin edition, by the late, great Shirley Hughes.
