Black Orchid (Deluxe)
Black Orchid (Deluxe) | Neil Gaiman
9 posts | 27 read | 19 to read
A New York Times Bestseller Before introducing the modern version of The Sandman, Neil Gaiman wrote this dark tale that reinvented a strange DC Comics super hero in the Vertigo mold. Featuring spectacular art by Gaiman's frequent collaborator, Dave McKean, BLACK ORCHID is now collected in hardcover for the first time. After being viciously murdered, Susan Linden is reborn fully grown as the Black Orchid, a hybrid of plant and human, destined to avenge her own death. Now, as this demigoddess attempts to reconcile human memory and botanical origins, she must untangle the webs of deception and secrets that led to her death. Beginning in the cold streets of a heartless metropolis and ending in the Amazon rainforest, this book takes the reader on a journey through secrets, suffering and self-rediscovery.

I read this Feb 17 and gave it 4 ⭐️. This was another one that I bought on the basis of the author and the artist. I will be honest, it‘s McKean‘s art that makes this story. It‘s a dreamy, hazy art that matches Gaiman‘s story.

I selected this book at a #BookCrossing meetup to release in my #LittleFreeLibrary. The problem was that I browsed through the book before placing it on the bookshelf. You guessed it! I‘m reading it now...and I never did release it on my bookshelf. This book is cruel and mean so far. That‘s okay because it fits with what I‘m seeing my country becoming. What‘s the answer? Maybe the answer is in this graphic novel.

Wow. What a cool story. Some of the most gorgeous artwork I've ever seen. I like how there wasn't tons of explanation. #readathon

This is so me right now. Must everyone in this waiting room scream into a cell phone? I understand the need for hard, easy to clean surfaces in a room filled with sick folks, but sound-dampening ceiling tiles would really be nice.

Trav The illustrations look gorgeous! 9y

I wanted more Gaiman after finishing Lucifer, so I picked up Black Orchid. It's a superhero story that broke the 'rules' of the genre. And this is the pivotal scene that did it.

One of Neil Gaiman's first comic books. The story follows a hybrid-plant person from her pursuers. She flees with her younger plant "sister." Also has great cameos of other famous villains. Wacky, but amazing art and a fabulous fantastic storyline.
