#ThoughtYouWouldLikeButDidnt - How did the quality of Harris‘s writing plummet so far between books? I got this on release day, but with Clarice practically unrecognizable from the likable character she was before, the entire second act of the book taking almost 100 pages to get remotely interesting, and the worst, most ludicrous cliffhanger ending I‘ve ever read (which still hasn‘t been resolved), this was a total disappointment!

#ThoughtYouWouldntLikeButDid - Going into the Wheel of Time series, almost anyone who read it agrees on something... things really slow down in the middle books. Since Book 7 is where the “slog” is supposed to begin, I expected to be bored. But with some events from earlier books moving forward, the introduction of a badass character (that would be Cadsuane) and Rand FINALLY doing more than just moping, I really enjoyed this one!

Longest book I‘ve read? Right now it‘s Oathbringer at 1,306 pages, but I‘m currently reading the uncut version of The Stand at 1,439 pages!

For me, an immediate purchase author is Brandon Sanderson! I love his world-building and complex characters! And I love how his plot twists often shock me even though when I look back, all the foreshadowing was actually there!

For #Under250pages I read my first graphic novel of the year. The story had its strengths, especially Kelly Sue DeConnick‘s gritty dialogue that fit perfectly in the Old West setting. Unfortunately, the story gets too convoluted for its own good, and the art is so opaque it can hard to make out who did what. Some great ideas hindered by a so-so execution!

Looks like another #ManicMonday challenge is in the bag! 🛍 Thank you for always brightening up our Mondays @JoScho 😊

When we think of #Ascarybook our minds tend to go to novels by Stephen King or Shirley Jackson, but there are very scary graphic novels as well. Few books disturbed me as much as Alan Moore‘s “Swamp Thing” run, where he gave us creepers like The Boogey Man, as well as the horrifying moment when a monster was born... “Yes... I... have read... the file!” 😱

“Oathbringer” was my favorite book yet in the Stormlight Archive series. As we learned more about the history of Roshar and its inhabitants, bits of dialogue and seemingly minor events from the earlier books meshed together to create a full cohesive narrative. A true masterpiece in world building and character studies!

A #vampire novel you can really sink your teeth into! (See what I did there?) 🧛‍♂️

A gothic novel filled with monstrous creatures inspired by the classic Hammer horror films, as well as quirky characters whose witty dialogue provides many laughs in between the horror. I had a lot of fun reading this sometimes horrific but always enthralling vampire story!

One for me is “Winter Witch”, a fun sword and sorcery adventure featuring a strong yet ruthless shield maiden hunting down a brilliant and crafty sorceress. I loved this novel... even if the cover and title remind me that another frigid New England winter will soon be here! 🥶

#FavoriteFallRead - My favorite Batman Halloween story is not “The Long Halloween”, but the three Halloween specials the creative team put out before TLH!

The first has Batman fighting The Scarecrow‘s reign of terror while also being wooed by a mysterious woman. The second pits him against the Mad Hatter with some help from a pre-Batgirl Barbara Gordon. And the third is a Halloween themed retelling of “A Christmas Carol”!

#GhostStory - Usually when I think about ghosts, I think of the Scooby Doo gang unmasking someone who was trying to scare everyone away to buy up land cheap (apparently real estate agents just don‘t exist in the Scooby Doo world)!

But the tagged book is a genuine ghost story with beautiful prose, a plucky heroine, and creepy atmosphere. Highly recommended! 👻

#Wicked - The word often gets thrown around in reference to witches (mainly because of that one bad apple), but most witches I know are actually benevolent and compassionate people. Rachel Morgan, Wanda Maximoff, Arra Pelindrake, and the good witches from the Potterverse are all noble heroines. Witches aren‘t wicked, they PROTECT us from the wicked! 🧙‍♀️

#Pumpkin - Everyone at my work is decorating their cubicles for Halloween. I was originally going to decorate my area with scary books, but I realized that might be a tripping hazard (plus I‘d be tempted to just read the books at my desk all day), so I went with pictures of horror books and thrillers instead! Someone also gave me this mini-pumpkin to give my desk a little extra Halloween atmosphere! 🎃
