When a single mom ends up playing an unwilling fake girlfriend to a charming playboy baseball player, love suddenly turns everything upside down in this fun, heartwarming multicultural romance. Angel Gomez has never lived by the book. A Bronx-based unwed mother by the time she was sixteen, Angels personal mission has always been to show the world that a Puerto Rican girl is not to be messed withespecially by a man. The only thing that matters to Angel, now, is providing for her son and earning enough tips at the club to complete her nursing degree along the way. Love is nowhere on her agenda. Caleb The Duke Lewis is a star pitcher for the Bronx Bolts whose romantic escapades make delicious fodder for gossip columns. But lately hes been trying to keep a lower profileso much so that when he meets Angel, first while shes in her nurse uniform and the next time behind the bar, she has no idea who Duke is, fails to fall for his obvious charm, and ends up throwing a drink in his face! She is the perfect woman for Duke...to fool the tabloids into thinking hes finally settling down. But what begins as a charade soon has Duke and Angel hurtling into a full-blown romance that rocks each of their worlds and begs the question: Is this the real dealor are some love stories just too good to be true?

……….I wanted to like this so much but sadly, this just didn‘t live up to its potential. little character development and I just couldn‘t vibe with the writing. female MC was sometimes referred to by her job title but the male MC never was and I ….
also still hunting for Black love stories that don‘t involve some sort of trauma which was most definitely not this book

What a heart warming home run of a romance.

The story of Angel, a single mother and nursing student, and Duke, a star pitcher for a ML baseball team. Angel reluctantly agrees to pretend to be Duke‘s girlfriend to help fix his bad boy image. The Perfect Date had the chance to be a great fake dating hate to love romance. But the mediocre writing, lackluster plot, and character development, failed to deliver the sparks needed to believe Angel and Duke‘s budding romance.

I think Jasmine Guillory ruined rom-coms for me. I fell in love with her characters and now these others don't even stand a chance. I finished but it just felt "meh".

bookandcat Guillory is great right??? Try Alyssa Cole Reluctant Royals or 5y
Megabooks There‘s a rare adult video on TikTok where the guy who‘s 40ish says, “oh, you were born in 2000. What are you up to? ... Going to college?!? 🤯🤯” 🤣🤣 (Note, I am about to turn 40.) 5y
MaggieCarr @bookandcat I've enjoyed Christina Lauren's stand alones! Started 'The Friend Zone' by Abby Jimenez this morning and I like it a lot more! 5y
MaggieCarr @Megabooks yup! Feeling really old at work these days, I'm 31 but the crew I came on board with all are relocating or retiring and the high school and college kids replacing them seem so young and just don't have strong work ethics. :( 5y

WHY CANT I STOP READING ROMANCE?!?! I‘m typically a very diverse reader, I do books from all genres (except mystery, tbh), time periods and continents. But of the 36 books I‘ve read this year, half have been romance.

Def recommend this one... yay for black and brown romance couples! And #ownvoices. I can see this one making an excellent Netflix movie. Gina Rodriguez and Michael B Jordan perhaps?

Carleneishere Update: this isn‘t what I would call a romance. The focus was on the soap opera drama surrounded the main characters, not on the romantic couple themselves. There was barely any kissing or sex, and it didn‘t end with a grand HEA. I would call this chick-lit (gross, I hate that term) rather than romance. 5y

Also out June 11, 2019 was The Perfect Date by Evelyn Lozada. A cute, flirty, fun read with some tidbits of great information. It‘s not a book is necessarily recommend to EVERYONE but one thing I loved was the author‘s dedication to showcasing realities. The main character, Angel, and her son Jose are working their best to make a better life for themselves. Angel works multiple jobs and is putting herself through nursing school. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ cont‘d

Smangela Jose has asthma, a very real problem for many children of color and this prompted me to do some reading into this on my own time. I love that Lozada took her platform to shed light on an issue that could help people out! 6y

STAY FAR AWAY

Looks like something cute and fun. That is NOT what you get.

1. I don‘t feel the author did any research on baseball players and how contracts work.
2. She just left her son (who hadn‘t woke up yet) in the hospital with her neighbor to wear a wire to catch the bad doctor. Riiiiiiight.
3. Not a single person in this book is worth liking. Even the righteous main character who gave the baseball player a unethical shot anyway.

kimmypete1 4. Too much man handling by people.
5. Worse than a daytime soap. Random drug use, too many different plot things: injuries, skeevy doctors, attempted assault, blackmailing, abuse, murder, crazy ex, need I go on?
6. Not a fan of the awkward at times writing. I know Angel is finish up nursing school, it‘s super awkward to have her referred to as a “student nurse” several times throughout the book instead of using her name.

At first I found this book cute and fun, but now it‘s like a train wreck I can‘t look away from. Too much man handling from the male love interest. Too much crazy with his people, I feel like I‘m reading a soap opera. The writing is off putting too. I‘m at 80% and instead of using the main characters name the author keeps using “student nurse”.
