pickThis was so much better than I'd anticipated! Not the saccharine sweet tale id thought (phew!) But an inspiring and beautifully written story.

I like that its Australian and set in 1940's, so far it reads easily.

A grieving wife needs to work by the rumbling trains that took him from her. A lonely child and an even lonlier soldier poet find joy in simple pleasures. A poem written to a woman that two men love in very different ways. The author delivers a quiet story filled with loss, heartache and slowly unfolding hope. 3🌟
pickI have had this audiobook on my tbr for a couple of years, mainly because my favorite narrator (Mr. West) is one of the readers, and I require periodic fixes, but also because it‘s historical fiction that appealed to me.
I‘m glad I listened to it: a slow, sad story about characters dealing with grief and coping after WWII. Really pretty writing, but I wish there was a little more development, and the ending sort of fell flat for me.

There's Ross, the poet with writer's block & pessimism. And there's Dr. Frank, heavy with guilt over failed medical aid he's provided. pick3.5 stars A kind of quiet read. A story about loss, moving forward, the guilt one may feel about moving forward and possibly forgetting. While these themes centre on Ani Lachlan, the other 2 characters Roy and Frank are going through the same. Reminded me of Itani's novel, Tell.
