Mint Juleps with Teddy Roosevelt
Mint Juleps with Teddy Roosevelt: The Complete History of Presidential Drinking | Mark Will-Weber
3 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Stroll through our countrys memorable momentsfrom George Washington at Mount Vernon to the days of Prohibition, from impeachment hearings to nuclear weapons negotiationsand discover the role that alcohol played in all of them with Mark Will-Webers Mint Juleps with Teddy Roosevelt: The Complete History of Presidential Drinking. As America transformed from fledgling nation to world power, one element remained constant: alcohol. The eighteenth century saw the Father of His Country distilling whiskey in his backyard. The nineteenth century witnessed the lavish expenses on wine by the Sage of Monticello, Honest Abes inclination toward temperance, and the slurred speech of the first president to be impeached. Fast forward to the twentieth century and acquaint yourself with Woodrow Wilsons namesake whisky, FDRs affinity for rum swizzles, and Ike's bathtub gin. What concoctions can be found in the White House today? Visit the first ladys beehives to find out! In Mint Juleps with Teddy Roosevelt, youll learn: Which Founding Fathers had distilleries in their backyards The teetotalers versus the car-totalers Whose expensive tastes in vintages led to bankruptcy Which commanders in chief preferred whiskey to whisky The 4 Cs: Cointreau, claret, Campari, and cocktails The first ladies who heralded the hair of the dog and those who vehemently opposed it The preferred stemware: snifter or stein? Which presidents and staff members abstained, imbibed, or overindulged during Prohibition Recipes through the ages: favorites including the Bermuda Rum Swizzle, Missouri Mule, and Obamas White House Honey Ale So grab a cocktail and turn the pages of Mint Juleps with Teddy Roosevelt for a unique and entertaining look into the liquor cabinets and the beer refrigerators of the White House. Cheers!

Each chapter is devoted (in chronological order) to an U.S. President and his drinking habits or lack thereof. Bits and pieces of relevant alcoholic history, i.e. prohibition, are included. Not really a book to read quickly through— while not dry, there‘s only so much one can take of such a singular topic— dipped in and out of this over the past three months.

(Where I live, liquor stores are state-owned and are closed but do ship. This was 👇

ValerieAndBooks ....our last order from them. It looks like a lot but we did it to qualify for free shipping. It should last a very long time, except for the wine 😊). 5y
Leftcoastzen Nice grouping! 5y
MicheleinPhilly Thank goodness we exited the dark ages 2 years ago and can buy beer and wine at the grocery store! 5y

Lesanne In my state the liquor stores are considered essential businesses so they have remained open! 😏 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Leftcoastzen thanks 😊! Ready for warm weather cocktails 🍹! 5y
ValerieAndBooks @MicheleinPhilly I agree!! Although it‘s a pain to have to buy them separately from groceries 😏 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Lesanne lucky you! It‘s crazy how it‘s different from state to state. I actually live a few minutes from another state border and people were being fined for trying to cross (non-essential travel) to buy liquor there 😮 5y
RamsFan1963 @Lesanne Same here. I live in West Virginia, so liquor stores and stores that sell guns are at the top of the "essential" list ??? 5y
ValerieAndBooks @RamsFan1963 @Lesanne when we were in Virginia in March to bring son home from college, we learned about the PEnnsylvania liquor stores closings — and stocked up in VA before going home. PA didn‘t allow online orders through their liquor stores until April! And just now allowing curbside pickups at”select stores “ but not any near me. All this isn‘t the worst problem to have, considering, but it‘s strange! 5y
Lesanne @RamsFan1963 I‘m in North Carolina, so same! 5y
MicheleinPhilly When I lived in Los Angeles I was like, “What do you mean I can buy vodka at CVS???” 😂 5y
ValerieAndBooks @MicheleinPhilly right?! Whenever I go back to California to visit family and friends, I remember how easy they have it (and cheaper, too)! 5y
RamsFan1963 @ValerieAndBooks If you don't mind me asking, because I was born and raised in Virginia, where is your son going to college in Va? 5y
ValerieAndBooks @RamsFan1963 Washington & Lee — finishing up his first year. About 300 miles from our home. We pass through WV to and from there 😊 5y

This very beer from the fridge is mentioned here! Yards makes this, based closely on Washington ‘s favorite porter recipe. I know what I‘m having tonight 😊🍺

Also, Washington had dogs named “Drunkard” , “Tippler” and “Tipsy” 😆.

Suet624 Amazing! To everything! 5y
Daisey That‘s awesome! 5y
